well the best place to get chicken wire for a running pen near me is lowes. i can buy 1-48' 150" roll for around $70...most other places get up to $100 or more. i have a 2 acre starting pen and it costs about $150 to fence one side being that an acre is 208'' on each side. 2 rolls for each side cost me around $600 not to mention the $6 a piece t-posts i had to put every 10 ft and the corner and brace posts and the gate. this is pretty much a good average on pricing, give or take a little. just take wat i got as far as prices and figure up what it equals up to depending on how many acres you decide to fence in and you should have a pretty good idea. either way its gonna cost alot. really all i got is a starting pen but me bein 15 years old is great to me cause thats really all i could afford lol. i wasnt to sure about building one at first because of the price but ill tell ya it was worth it and since yall are wantin to do 15 to 20 acres...it would be great

I was talking to a guy at the local club and he said that they ordered the plastic covered stuff from a company in Vermont. I will see if I could get a phone number and post it.

We got our wire from Bryne fence in Md. We fenced in about 12 acres and the fence cost about four thousand dollars with posts we figure another grand.

I just bought my fence material from Tractor Supply Company. I gave around $60.00 for a 48"x150' roll. T-post where around $4.50 a piece for 6'. And treated corner post where around $7.00 a piece. I also bought a roll of the cheap barb wire and it was around $30.00 for 1300'. And don't forget about the electric fence to keep animals out of it. 15 to 20 acres that will probably cost you an extra $200.

I got to be getting old, there a place in Ma. that manufactures plastic coated wire for rabbit pens and I can not remember the name .( I'll keep thinking till I do ) They sell direct to the public, and it lasts a long time . However; It is expensive.I built a 17 acre+ pen and used the 5ft with 1ft apron on it plus barbed wire and this summer an electric fence charger. I priced wire at TSC, Lowe's, Farmers Co-op, etc and no one sells good wire cheap. Mine is double coated and been up 5 years, still looks good. If you buy cheap it will cost in the long run. I used 34+rolls of wire and 3 rolls of barbed wire and 367 metal posts and 26 treated 8" wooden posts . Are you sure you want to do this ? Labor is the hardest thing especially if you intend to do it yourself.

I bought 42 rolls from Brad Byrne and really like it.Make sure you get nothing less than 18guage Heavy Duty.Fence has been up since 2004 and still doing good.I've seen deer and coyotes hit the wire running full speed and just bounce right off.

I've never understood the fighting of the barbs when using barbwire to put up a pen.
High tension wire has no barbs to catch the fence or your shirt when handling and has 3X the zinc to last much longer.
Putting some springs on the wire at the end post keeps them from breaking the wire if trees fall or deer impact the fence...

Thanks guys for all the leads on the material. I know it is a large job. We've been kickin this idea around for some time now. I don't think we will start until ne t summer. I have the entire summer off and figure we could hammer it out then instead of just of just evenings and weekends. We have also thought about just cutting them loose and hopin they come back! It would be alot cheaper. Just to scared to try it. Well thanks again for all the info.

Cheaper..
Easier to Work With...(Ever had that Stuff jump off the Roll

)
Easy to mend...
My fence building Experience has always Been With barbed Wire tried the high Tension and got frustrated fast and the critters Dont try to get under or over the barbed wire as often!!!
3 strands one at top
halfway down and a few inches from the bottom
have seen barbed Wire last for over 10 years
Call around the various supply areas and watch the classifieds i found a good deal online here when somebody changed their mind!!!
I did 3 acres on my place and got a couple rolls left my lines run off a bit to include some good cover..
I Also hooked my fencing to the barbed Wire using UV resistant Wire ties get a 1000 for about the same price as a 100 hog rings and pliers but much easier to work with and if it ever gets loose anywhere just add another wire tie....they also Do not bite into the wire causing rust spots...used the t post wire hooks twisted tight with good ol fencin pliers at all the t posts
I purchased the red barn apron fence got a good deal on 12 rolls of 60"x150' for around a $1000 Did 3 acres and with posts and all cost me around $4,500 used telephone poles cut to 8 foot burried 3 feet Sacreated in for corners with 4x4 bracing 8 foot treated 4x4 every 50 feet also sacreated with t posts every 10 foot between ran a hot wire along the top with a ground 6 inches below on the outside...
make Sure you get a Charger With Some ZAP to it Cats got to where they were ignoring the slight charge on the first 1 miler I bought they dont ignore the 25 mile weed burner!!!

Yes, I've been twisted up in barbwire a few times...hands, arms, shirt and pants.
Most anybody round here that's put up high tension has a spooler you can barrow so it don't get away from you. We made a couple out of flat stock and some all-thread, easy enough to do.
I guess it's just a personal preference thing. I just like the long lasting stuff.

Just remember for those that are thinking about building a rabbit pen.Dose not matter how you build it your not done with it when you get done. Its not worth the time if you cannot keep rabbits in it.A rabbit pen with out rabbits is not a rabbit pen.
