Have a great story about a young hunter that I sold a dog to tonight. He is in the 6th grade and went bear hunting with his dad and fell in love with hounds
running game. His dad got him a pretty little pup they named Roscoe. My brother had a kennel advertised for sale in the local bulletin board. his dad called and
came and got the kennel. In picking it up he noticed my brother had beagles as well. He said he had bought his son a pup and he loved to hear a dog run. He asked
if we knew anyone who had a good older dog to run his pup with.
After discussing it with my brother, we decided to sell an older female we have to them. We call her Trixie, she is in anybody's book a rabbit dog 110%. We have
had her since she was 3 and she is soon to be 8. She is still the best we will ever unsnap and we both loved her to death. My brother and I both thought she would be great
for this young hunter as she can still do it all in style.
Well they came to try her tonight and I took her and another young female, as well as his pup. Trixie put on a clinic as I have seen her do hundreds of times! She, and
my other young female, pounded a good running rabbit for over 45 minutes in heat about 75 degrees and humid. After it was all said and done. JJ, the boy with the pup,
pulled out one hundred dollars of his lawn mowing money and bought Trixie. It came full circle for me because I remember doing the same thing about 20 years ago.
I told JJ she will teach him what rabbit hunting and running dogs is all about. It is not about the money because she was worth much more than that 100 dollars. It was
about getting a young hunter a great start. Trixie is a solid hound in all respects and we sold her to this young fellow to get him a good start and to get her a great home until
she dies. I would go pay big money for another one like her tomorrow!! We have a bunch of good young hounds and she had given us two great litters of pups. But, I know
by the look in JJ's eyes he wanted a rabbit dog and he got one.
As I was leaving my dad's house he said man I hate to see her go. She was a great hound. I said I know that and I am glad JJ got her. He bought her with his own money
from mowing lawns. My dad replied with "I knew a guy who has done that too." It just really hit home with me and I was so glad to get this future hunter a good start
like I was able to get 20 years ago. Thanks for reading.
