DEAD SNAKE!!!

All jokes aside, the only snakes I kill are poisonous ones. This copperhead measured 41 ½” and was curled back in striking position 10" from one of my little B&T gyps. I don't know how the other 2 made it past the copperhead b/c they walked right where it was, but I'm glad nonetheless. I just happened to look down and it was curled back about to nail her on her side. I only had a split second to whack it & thank god I had my Tally-Ho stick w/ me!

This would have been the 2nd time in less than a year a dog of mine was bitten by a copperhead.

Yeah summer running in the south can BITE! I try to stay out of areas that I know have a heavy snake population. Sometimes, they just can't be avoided. Here is the gift I unwrapped on Memorial Day.

That is one of the biggest copperheads I have evers seen! Around here they run between 2 and 3 feet. A copperhead bigger than 36 inches is huge! Imagine the amount of venom it could inject. Even though copperhead venom is less lethal than rattlesnake, that one could have put a serious hurtin' on a hound, or a man, scares me to death to think of that thing hitting one of my young'uns.

It's the smaller younger snakes that do more damage. They tend to inject more venom than needed. The older larger snakes only inject what is needed. Now I don't know any of this for sure, this is just the research I have read. I don't ever want to find out.

How do you southern hunters deal with those things? Do you carry anti venom? When do the hole up in the fall? Do you lose a lot of dogs?

Can lose a hound to a big rattler, you can see snakes year round here, just not as many during the colder months.

Beaglerun, I will take your word for that and I agree, I hope I never have to find out AND I am not going to go around trying to test that theory. Guys, in my area we try to run hounds early in the morning before the snakes warm up enough to be active. Still, it is a gamble, we just try to keep the odds in our favor. I don't run hounds at all mid-July through mid-August except after rains if it cools enough, just too risky for me. Still, we get one bitten every now and then.
