I went to buy a bag of dog food the other day. I've been feeding Purina Hi-Pro. Well the bag looks completely different, says Hi-Pro but different colors and what not. I figured they just changed the bag. But when I got home half of it looks like Hi-pro and then it looks like there is some other type of food mixed in with it. Anyone know anything about this?

I quit them last years as I saw a change when they sold out to Nestles. They also messed up the rebates system which I used for years. Went to Diamond and am satisfied. Tired of sending money overseas!

I have been thinking of giving Hi-Pro another try. I have been feeding Pride food for about a year now and while it has done a good job, both my newest hounds constantly have the "runs" with it. The older hounds I had done very well on Pride but the 2 new young hounds have constant runny stool now. I have been thinking of giving Hi-Pro a try with these 2 dogs to see if it firms up their stool any. There is no Diamond dealer anywhere near me (or Black Gold either) and my quality feed choices are limited.

DGTX, (or anyone that has fed Diamond for a while) have you noticed any change in the amount of stool produced lately??? I've fed Diamond Premium (green bag) for about 7 or 8 years and it seems to me that there has been a lot more to clean up for the last few months. I may be losing it too, but thought there may have been an ingredient change or something.

I switch my food up pretty regularly just to give the dogs some variety, but I always feed a purina product because they always support many of the organizations and events I participate in!

I fed Diamond for years. I quit it because it got too pricey for me. It cost more to feed the dogs than it did to feed my family. I went to Black Gold. I have been very happy with it. My dealer quit carrying Black Gold recently and I tried a bag of Diamond Performance. I had three times the stool with it as I had with BG. I am now driving 25 miles to buy the Black Gold.

Well, whatcha know, just tonight I was passing by a feed & gas shop and noticed a big banner hanging outside that looked familiar, so I turned around and went back to see if it was what I thought it said. Yep, a big sign that said "We're now a DIAMOND DOG FOOD DEALER". It's only about 6 miles from my place so I guess I'll try some Diamond!

I feed diamond and am well pleased with it. I have had dogs for over 50 years and IMO diamond is as good as you can buy, worth the price.

We are happy with the Diamond Green Bag. I wouldn't have any objections to trying Black Gold, but it's about $2 higher per bag around these parts.

several yrs ago ,I took Purina and ground it in a mixer to make some soft puppy food. when the mixer was dont there was LOTS of black hair at the top of the feed. a friend of mine ground some puina dog food and had the same thing in his feed. So I dont buy purina anymore. maybe other dog feed livestock hides in it too, but I have never noticed a bunch of hair in the ground feed.
I buy the Diamond because I have had good results. but mosty it is due to the fellow who sells it. He is retired, he ALWAYS

sorry my post is above. This fellow sells Diamond out of his garage,he always has a supply, if he is not home, you just put the money in the green box and write your name down on the clip board. You cant beat that.

I Gave Hi Pro a try this fall and my dogs couldn't keep weight on with it when the weather got cold. I chose it because the fat content is very low and my dogs were having loose stool, but even with Dog Bloom, I can't keep weight on the dogs, especially the bird dogs, but Beagles too. I fed it years ago to coonhounds and beagles and never had this problem so there may have been a change. I also discovered a problem with Dog Chow. My retreivers were getting ear infections often and another breeder suggested I switch food. I assumed he was nuts, but decided to give Diamond a try a few months later for other reasons. No more infections. Well, it began to be a hassle to find Diamond, so I went back to Dog Chow and the infections began again and the light came on. I may be wrong, but from my experience, The Dog Chow wasn't fighting the infections like the Diamond. I know it sounds crazy, but I did nothing different than I normally do. Just something to think about. MIKE

me and my father feed hi-pro for years to beagles and coonhounds.i stoped feed hi-pro 1 1/2-2 years ago because dogs had runny loose crap and could not hold there weight in the colder weather.i went to purina one and proplan it is a great feed hands down but cost to much to feed 20+ dogs so i started feeding my adult dogs diamond green 26/18 and diamond professional 30/20.i still feed my pups and senior dogs purina one and proplan.there is more stoll or waste from the diamond than with the purina one or proplan but still firm.i like the diamond brand dog food so far.talk to you all later.when i go get my feed i get my brotherinlaw a bag and he feeds purina hi-pro the bag design and color has change so has the color and shape of feed well in the bag i bought him last did.

I used to feed Hi-Pro until my vet recommended IAMS. I'm not overly satisfied with it (cause it's darn expensive) but it does seem to keep the hounds happy. I was suprised the vet recommended it because he doesn't even carry it, he stocks another brand.
I'm going to shop my local feed stores and see what they have. Problem I've had with lesser expensive brands is that the first ingredients are alway a by-product (hides, feet, beaks, etc) or a corn meal or such (no real nutrition in that).

The USDA allows a certain amout of hair and poultry feathers to be added to feed to and it counts toward the protien % content of feeds. This crud is not digestable and usually tears the dogs guts up. But YOUR goverment still allows it. PAYOLA
Take a quill feather and slice it at an angle. The end result will cut like a knife. Grind feathers up and think what it will do to a dogs guts!. A vet brought this to my attention years ago.
