well as is typical its tick season again.... i know most of you guys have mentioned it before but something happen i never thought would... on tuesday afternoon i picked my little boy up from the daycare and as soon as i got there he came running up to me and told me his weewee was big... embarrassed infront of the babysitter i told him not to say that and packed his stuff and headed to the truck... the babysitter mentioned he had been scratching all day... well we get home and were sitting on the couch and my wife sits down beside me and i tell my oldest son to tell him mom what he said... he came in and told her not to laugh and it wasnt funny... when i told him to pull his pants down my jaw dropped... his unit was swollen up the size of a pop can..... .... you can imagine the look on my face at this point. i went from sort of laughing him off to completely tore up and scared...... on my way to the emergency room with him i stopped by my dads house to show him and while showing him we noticed on the bottom side of it was a tick attachted... the doctors pulled it out and told us to watch him for a fever and the swelling would go down... its still swollen alittle today but gradually going down....

we had given him a bath monday evening and it was fine and the tick was not there... he said it started itching that night in bed and when he woke up from his nap at the babysitters and went to the bathroom he said it was big... was it ever....
you can imagine the look on ol dads face and the panic that went through me when my 4 year old son pulled his pants down and his unit was the size of a popcan(not exagerating one bit) and looking like it was going to burst... so please... make sure you guys check real well and especially your kids if you take them with you in the fields or woods while exercising the dogs...

Thanks for sharing that story. With the threat of lymes disease or other bad infections you can't stress enough
to check everywhere, especially kids! My kids run dogs with me often and I try my best to educate them to look as
we go. If they see a tick on them get it off! Thanks for the post!

Bless his heart!

I think we might have a special brand of ticks this summer. I got home from KY Sunday and pulled 3 off me (not unusual) but they were still little and flat; hadn't been there long. Nevertheless, where they bit me the areas are extremely inflamed and itchy.

Also, I have a few bites where I didn't see a tick. Just an itchy knot came up, dark in the center. When I took tweezers and pulled that dark center out it was oozy underneath. Are those turkey ticks or chiggers? Usually chiggers get me by the dozens, and these are just a few that look like mosquito bites that were scratched until they bled.

the past few years for us have been really bad around the house for ticks... this year is the same.... i cant even mow the grass on the riding mower without getting them on me. i know i always check them when they come in the house in the evenings but i never dreamed that a tick would cause such swelling even in a sensitive area like that...

bev, your right though the areas where ive pulled ticks off me this year have all been red and irritated afterwards.

is it winter time yet... :)

I think what happens is you scratch the little ticks off before you see them. The little Black Legged Ticks are not as visible or durable. Everybody around here calls them deer ticks. I have no less than 12 inflamed bites on me now. I have been wearing shorts lately. I can see them before they get above my knee. My buddies little boy had several on him after we ran on Tuesday night. He told me he had one on his "package" too. I have been running dogs almost every night and never have a night that I don't get at least three off me.

Found one in my daughter's hair that had begun swelling last summer. We use Deep Woods insect repellent on the adults, cattle tags on the dogs' collars, Sevin dust in the dog houses and area, and family insect repellent for the little one. Spray it right in her hair and bath her at home later. I'm glad your son is OK now, that would scare me to death. Mine are 11 and 7 and can find an pull most off themselves now, but we still check the little one.

Bev , i have gotten that type tick for the first time it just looks like a black dot. I had to use tweezers to have it removed. We call the kind ucant really see turkey ticks..more like lice..as a matter of fact some have used lice shampoo for removal. After removing the small ones it still itches for quite some time. So far we have not gotten the turkey ticks in this part of southern indiana but im sure it will happen soon.

Thanks, billi. Fortunately I didn't get too many of them. I always get caught the first time out in warm weather. Then I remember to bathe in repellent, or just stay out of the weeds.

Those medicated shampoos have coal tar in them, that is what makes them smell so strong, almost like creosote. Coal tar is the same stuff in flea and tick shampoo for dogs. I have never tried it for that purpose, but it makes sense. Bluecollar, I hope he's ok and suffering no ill effects. The story about church reminds me when my son got into my wife's purse at church looking for something to play with and found two or three somethings. He held one up, barely old enough to speak, and said out loud, "hey mommy, what's this for?"
