Them sure are some good eating.

I always thought that you should pinch them off and leave the root.

Jimmie, jimmie, a Floyd fan? You keep growing higher on my list ( I know you could care less, but you and I will have a lot to talk about someday when we meet face to face) Mine was a Seger concert and I didn't get quite that far. I woke up in an old house with gas heat, about 90 degrees, my car parked out front. no more details, as someone may tell my son!

You're welcome, false morels are very dangerous and if nothing else make you deathly sick. I have been finding several Morels under ASH and Poplar and Apple. The Elms should be the place soon. Enjoy them they are tastey,go well with Ramps and Taters and fresh Trout. Hey Chris you're missing out on Denise's Taters and Ramps,I'll eat you're share. Missed out on several good fly fiahing trips also, the trout are allover the Hatches and the Hatches are heavy.
Crabtree the best Brookie fishing is down you're way do you fish?

Those actually appear to be what we call beefsteak mushrooms. Thay are potentially dangerous to eat although I have eaten them since a kid. Some people also call them elephant ear mushrooms which get pretty big and they have the red head as these in the picture. This type of mushroom seems to be pretty meaty and that's where the name of beefsteak comes in. I'd be careful eating them to see if you can handle them as I have heard and read that they make some people sick. My family eats them with no poblems.

Very nice, I've never seen them that big nor that dark. Here in VA most of our morels are a cream color.

Just a friendly tip for mushroom hunting guys, if you hunt them use an old onion or potatoe bag to put your shrooms in rather than a plastic or paper bag. It allows the spores to seminate to new areas as you walk around. If you want more morels in your area, pick them, and at the same time let them do their job and spread their spores.

They also go good with fresh crappie filets!

Duke, good idea about the potatoe or onion bag!
