went out to run the dogs for a "few" hours today, as the duck season is closed between splits till next weekend,,, anyway,, got a chance to really see my two "indiana" dogs work,,, and one of them returned with a rust colored coat,,, i picked her up and found that she was bleeding a good bit from her ears,,, she'd shake her head and blood would spray,,, anyway,, my question is
what do y'all put on the dogs ears and tail (also bleeding) when they bleed in this manner.
thanks in advance for y'alls help.

I usually put more briars on them. After a while, they stop bleeding as much.

I hope you don't take my first statement wrong. I guess it sounded a little sarcastic. After they are ran a while, they will toughen up and the bleeding will not be nearly as bad. Their ears will begin to feel almost like leather inside. As far as the tails, they will still bleed some, but I wouldnt worry too much about it. If the dog is in too much pain to hunt, it will let you know in a hurry.

Rubbing Vaseline THICK on the cuts helps ,Or you can use Neosporin (an antibiotic ointment) you can get either at the drug store ,Hope this helps. Shannon

Most First Aid Kits come with a can of spray stuff that stops bleeding. I usually try to keep some of this around. I dont think it says anything about being for dogs but I figure if its good enough for humans it is good enough for a dog.
As far as ears and tails go, I dont worry much about them cause they will seldom bleed bad enough to hurt the dog.

I agree with RES, scabs are the prelude to leather, now the eyes are another thing, we've been washing them out and aplying vaseline around them.
Good hunting...Patch

Most of my hounds have their tails docked just enough to keep them from getting eat up by the briers... I take off about 1/4 the tail when pups are two days old. I recently bought a new 12 week old pup that had a full tail. Put a band on this one and it droped off in about a week. I put a heavy coat of vasiline on my long tail dogs before they go out. This helps to keep the briers from doing a number on them tails. I run mostly Red/White and Lemon/White hounds and their ears do not fair to well in heavy briers. After each hunt I check their ears and put Udder Balm on them. Udder Balm is for milk cows bags and tits. You can get it at the Feed Store. It does a good job on them ears and is good for your hands too..........Harvey
