starting over again

I ran a good bunch of dogs back in the late 80's early 90's. I never trialed any of my dogs just went and watched a friend of mine. He ran LP and ended up winning a world hunt. I am now going to start running in trials and was just wondering about the AKC trials. I have heard very little about how the derbys work (need some info) and from what I have heard they will take away points if you dog does wrong. Let me know about a club to join and if they will treat my dogs fair as I have a good bunch of hounds again. I live in KY. thanks

Nobody want to tell me about AKC trials, or the DERBY? Nobody wants to brag on their club? I need some help on deciding where to join and run my dogs.

I live in KY around Richmond. I have heard of three AKC clubs from around this area. Have been told not to join one of them. I will not say which one, I am not trying to bash anyones club. I am just looking for more information. I have an 8 month old male dog that I would like to run as a DERBY but I dont know enough about the DERBY to make that decision. Thanks for the reply

I can't say about KY but up in Maine all the derby trials I have seen are sanctioned trials not licensed so your dog won't gain points towards an AKC title but you also don't have points taken away. In my opinion a derby trial is to get the young dogs feet wet before you dump him in with the big boys and over pressure them. That being said I would wait until next year if it was me 8 months is young and you're really taking a chance of teaching him bad habits at a tender age, next year he will still be under 2 yr old so he can still be entered and will stand a much better chance of placing as well as he will be more settled in his hunting style and less apt to pick up bad habits.

Thank you for the info. I did not know the cut off age for the derby.

In Large Pack, a dog is a derby provided he has not attained the age of 2 by the date of the trial. For all other formats a dog is a derby if it was welped between 1 July of the previous year and 30 June of last year.( Dog welped 1 July 2007 thru 30 June 2008 is a 2009 derby---- dog welped 1 July 2008 and after is a 2010 derby). Hope this helps.. I live in Pa. so I can't be of any help on a club, unless you are willing to relocate.
