OK, how about a discussion about dogs that can lock on a cottontail and not lose it. I'm not talking about the fastest dog, but a dog that runs probably a speed range close to medium fast (say a 7 or around there). So the question is who has owned or hunted with (that a buddy owned) a dog that can lock on a cottontail & not lose it? A dog that when there's a check you just sit back & know inside that this hound will grub out the check and find the rabbit. A dog you've watched time after time find the line of a rabbit that has doubled back, etc. This is the kind of hound I really like. What I would like to hear is what bloodline is this hound? In my case, when I think back on the ones who I've seen do this, they seem to have Jack of All Trades in their background. So who are these hounds & what are they out of? If they're still around, better yet. How are they in adverse conditions? These are the type hounds I would look to get breedings from.

my own personal dog would be ringo watched him pull a check in a large pack trial in a gravel parking lot covered in about an inch of ice by himself with 15 or so other males..he is out of nlpc ftch harecharmer ringo i would say he runs a solid 8 in speed but will gear accordingly..great check dog..and has caught more than his fair share of rabbits...nicest hound i will prolly ever own..might not suit anybody else but i like him..

I would say that Maravics Blue Ninja & BlueBarry line locks on and they are from Brankos Jack of all Trades. They seem to have a better than average nose and mine picks up most of the checks.

My NKC PP duel CH. Spice of life. You described him exactly. Have only owned one like him. in my life time. He did have some jack of all trades in his background and A lot of weir creek.

Stan, I have a little female here out of Kings My Dear Watson and Shoreacres Shakers Dinah that would qualify...I think you had a pup out of some Shoreacres stuff a little while back that you had up for sale. IF you still have it, you might have what you are looking for. If a rabbit is still up on top of the ground my female will find it. She isnt the fastest hound, but does well in Progressive pack trials and usually leads the pack with my Striker female when we all go hunting. The best thing about her is I havent found a condition yet that she cant run in. Snow, ice, dry ground, driving rain, doesnt matter. If rabbits are out she runs.

Idol, he is owned and is currently for sale at Hill Top Kennels. This hound is amazing. He's just top notch hound with AKC wins in the south. On New Years Day, he locked on several rabbits and ran than like a hound should, with control, and quick check work.

Your description describes every patch hound in my kennel except for the med-fast part , as they run for the most part more on the fast side but will gear down according to scent , all are quick with check work but run more with a tied to the rabbit style or run to catch style as I call it . It would be my opion that your question should be what all rabbit hound run like if kennel owners are breeding for true rabbit hounds and trying to better his hounds or line if not then whats the purpose of breeding ? Money ( not ) maybe they are breeding for swingers , slashers , what I call cheaters or ribbon chasers. Not wanting to stur up stuff with those that trail and some trail hounds are great gun dogs but a lot have been bred to only run in trails , 1 hour at a time , swing , slash and that just aint my type of hound or what I call a rabbit dawg.

My Self I have one here My Trixie Dog out of Circle C and Brankos Salmon River Dogs.. She can put the pressure on em for sure!!!

I went to a field trial about 10 years ago and it was in a cast that went out right after lunch in early September. It was about 90 degrees and dry to the “extreme”. We had 5 dogs out there and a guys dog opened and started running and no other dog joined him. The other dogs ran along the side and behind the dog, but they would only whimper a little and act like they wanted no part of it. This guys dog not only was running the rabbit, he was pounding the rabbit, and at times it sounded like he was sight chasing the rabbit, but still no assistance or harking in from any other dogs, including mine. So everybody in the cast started to believe that this dog was running “off game”. We told the judge what we thought. The owner of the dog didn’t get mad at us and he didn’t say a word, he just stood there with a smile, which ticked us off. The judge said that he saw the rabbit and we didn’t believe him. We thought he was basically cheating for this guy. But we thought wrong, and we all had to eat crow that day. That dog starting coming at us and there was a clearing by a barn where the grass was thin and we could see everything. Sure enough, a rabbit came across and here came that dog right behind him and then the judge. The rest of us just sit there quiet while this dog made absolute fools out of our dogs and than we all had to apologize for making fools out of ourselves. That day I saw a dog do just what you’re talking about, it locked on that rabbit for 40 minutes when all the rest of the dogs got nothing at all. I asked the guy what that dog was out of, he said it was 3/4 Yellow Creek and 1/4 Patch breeding.

I've never seen Junie hunt but I can tell you he is throwing some unbeleivable dogs. Jimmie's got a gyp that I had the pleasure of gun hunting last year. Moochie can flat lock on a rabbit. I seen her run one thru heavy cover, across a parking lot, across an cut corn field, (maybe 200 yards going across the rows) under a barn and out the other side, under a mobile home and was tearing the skirting off where the rabbit came out cause the hole wasn't big enough for her, and back to the thick cover where the rabbit holed up. I had to literally pull her off the hole as she was trying to dig that rabbit out of the frozen ground. This particular run lasted maybe 25 minutes and had to cover 3/4 mile. I don't recall any checks. I never tried to set up for the shot, I just watched. Jimmie, I am sure missin Moochie this year.

I have owned some great dogs but never have I owned a dog that could lock on a rabbit as well as Eight Ball. It isn't uncommon for me to have to catch him off a rabbit when I have him out soloing after 3 hours because I am ready to go (not because he is). I have never owned a dog that could solo like him. He can carry a line further without a check solo or with a pack than any hound I have ever seen. This dog doesn't need help.
He does a combination of ground and air scent and will eliminate checks where other dogs in the pack will check up. He has a fast machine gun chop and I believe that chop mouth helps him.
His speed is hard to determine so I will say average med speed with a 3 to 7+ speed range. He gears up and down with conditions so to see him one day you might think he is on the low end of med where the next day you might think he is upper med. He just won't run any faster than scent allows to keep it between his legs but will run as fast as scent will let him.

japa, I have to agree with you on the Blue Ninja. I know of a Buckeye Ninja Blueboy female that is good at grubbing out checks & keeping the run going. If I had the time & room, I'd pick up one of those pups SLaux was advertising on here; the last litter out of Buckeye Ninja Blueboy.

Two of the best I ever seen are IFC Greenwell's Reggie, and LPGRCH Skyview Cliff
