LP,SP,AKC,ARHA etc...

Post by epdroege »

OK, as you all can tell I'm new to the boards and relatively new to beagling (few years, no trialing). I have been spending weeks trying to research the differences in the various trials and titles. After searching this board and various others I'm slowly starting to catch on. However, the one thing that still has me stumped is when I see people talking about certain type dogs doing better in certain trials. For example, I'll hear someone say that a med/fast to fast dog will do better in LP and things like that. I'm sure this is common sense to a lot of you veterans but could someone help me out and explain the different trial types and the associated dog that would do best in each type? I just want tp try and match the style dog I like with the type of trials they have locally. ;) Thanks !!!

Anyone??? Sorry that this question may sound dumb but I just want to be sure that I don't end up with the type of dog that isn't suitable to the trails they run around here?

It kind of bites, basically, if you read the rules of each, you can try to see if your dog matches up to that format, best thing to do is go and watch, see what kind of dogs win in a particular format, then ask yourself if your dog/dogs are that style. A really good dog can do good in any format which is always a plus, there's just not a lot of them out there.

Little Pack is the most popular division in ARHA. This type of competition is run in 5-dog casts and tends to favor fast dogs with a tendency to work a wide check area. The dogs are scored on finding and running a rabbit, with individual accomplishment being a more important factor than close pack work.

Progressive Pack competition runs a 6-dog cast, generally of medium speed hounds. In addition to being scored for finding and running a rabbit, the hounds also have points subtracted from their scores for infractions involving their work in the pack and in the check areas.

Big Pack competition is unlike other ARHA trials in that all the entries in the hunt are released in the field at one time. The dogs are primarily scored on speed and drive and, with sometimes over 100 hounds in the field, a good, fast dog which will carry the front will do well.

    These are ARHA divisions.

From what i have learned you have the 1 to 10 scale 1 being like a dog that takes one step and barks 4 times one more step an barks 4 more times they use to call them brace hounds not sure if they still do. they looked like basset hounds.
and a 10 would be like a hare hound ,run to catch full tilt hard as they can go.
so a medium dog would be a 5
    hope this helps.
someone line us out if i am wrong ,i dont want to lead someone astray.

triple_s, that's exactly what I was looking for, thanks!! I've seen brace dogs run and with the amount of hunting I do they aren't for me. I just wasn't sure what type of trials they ran in. I'm guessing these are the same dogs that they call walkie talkie's. They walk a little bit and then bark. I enjoy running med/fast dogs so it looks like LP or PP is what I'm looking for. I can't get over how much info is out there but I'm reading everything I can get my hands on and thise site has been fantastic!! Thanks again. :P ;)
