"Color Phases" of Beagles & Registry questions

Post by dogfacenh »

As a kid (a long time ago, lol) I don't remember beagles being any color other than tri-colored or at least close to it. How and where did all the bluetick and black & tan beagles come? I'm assuming someone started crossing coonhounds with beagles somewhere along the line? Do all registries recognize all beagles regardless of color? And while I'm at it (50 questions) can an unregistered beagle be entered into a field trial or as we call in the coonhound world, become single registered in order to be able to compete in trials? Thanks for any responses. wd

Color phases always had them had bluetick, black&tan, And red or Lemon beagles 45 years ago when I was a teenager. As far as single registration yes in ARHA [NKC} or UKC. Not AKC.

know whatcha mean , lol , when i was a kid , in my neck of the woods , you had mostly unregistered tri colors , heck , if someone tried to sell you a registered dog you wasnt intrested unless you wanted to run trials, everyone i ever knew and hunted with wouldnt give $2 for a " trial dog " " too slow " amazing how some things change but some things still hold true for me , dont care if its reg. , grade or half mutt ,could be black and tan , bluetick ,tri colored green , purple or pink , if it will run me bunnies it will have a meal and a home :D have learned alot on here but in all honesty , i take alot with a grain of salt ,just dont let it influence what i like

crittergitter I couldn't agree with you more. You and I think alot alike. Back in 1973 (when I was 6) and started hunting rabbits with my grandfather(until I was about 15) I couldn't tell you if they were registered or not, knowing my grandfather, they weren't but they were always tri-colored. Guess I just wasn't old enough to notice anything else or it was just this part of the country at that time where you didn't see anything else but tri's, who knows. I'm not new to the game, been breeding, raising, training, hunting and competing with coonhounds for the past 25 years but have decided to get back into the little hounds. It's the same with the big hounds as it is in the little hounds and the people that you deal with I'm sure. Not to worry, I don't influence easily, been around the block a time or two. Just thought I'd throw out a couple questions to see how some would reply. I'm currently hunting a super nice unregistered bluetick bitch on hare, she has been doing a super job and I'm sure if she had some fancy pedigree behind her she wouldn't do any better, lol. Papers don't matter to me but having a hound that suits me at the end of my leash does. I will probably never enter a dog in a field trial, just wanted to know in case I ever get the itch! Look forward to some more of your posts, thanks. Wayne Dimond

All our Dogs at that time were grade. Most of the time you did not know what they were out of that was the reason we had so much color varation. As far as now who knows over the years how many times a pure bred dog got bred to a grade dog with a little some be side beagle in it and was still registered no DNA then.

Those colors have always been around. According to the AKC standard any hound color is permissible in the breed. The Old Hounds and Hunting magazines as well as the AKC Gazette shows Black and Tans, Blue Ticks, Tri Colors and others.

Thats cool, for some reason (now that I am older and wiser, lol) I seem to have more interest in the bluetick beagle. When I decided to get back into beagles I went hunting with a few that were for sale and were bred up real nice that had papers "to prove it". They all were good rabbit dogs but the unregistered blue bitch that I own now just showed me a little extra something. I also just bought a 5 month old bluetick pup out of KY, my brother is down there for some Army duty and hunted with the pups dam today and picked up my pup. Even when I was hot and heavy into the coondogs color didn't matter, guess that still applies for me now. wd
