question for some of you rabbit huntin veterans.

Took my older female and my redtick pup out today 7 1/2 months old. We had about 8 rabbits up between daylight and noon and i thought this was great as we havent been jumping to many at all lately. My question is about my pup, she is constantly barking at all kinds of stuff, she will bark way before my older dog and continue to bark way after. She is very mouthy. My older dog doesnt even honor her bark as she is always yipping at something. This is the first pup

i have had from birth and am really enjoying her progress. She has really come a long ways in the past month and jumped the majority of the rabbits today, although she she became quite confused at times but by then my older dog was on top of things. My other question is about her nose. She runs with it glued to the ground constantly and it was covered in blood today, raw all over the top of it. What if anything should i do about this and will it affect her running. I hope not because we only have 2 dogs and they are hunted 3 to 4 times a week.

To me what I know now.By By pup.She might turn around or she might not.If that old dog want trust her who will.If she doing more harm than good and that what it sound like.Longer you keep her the more money you will have in her.cost the same per day to feed a good dog.If you want to keep her keep her at the house. Now this is what I would do.Haveing beagles now for 36 years. You might not like what I say.But trying to help.

Thanks rabbitearl....your 30 some years vs my 2.....i would say maybe your onto something.

so its NOT common for a pup to get mouthy/excited and open up to soon?

Let me give you an example, this morning in the area where we jumped several rabbits she would open up where the other dog would not, and she would run around obviously confused about which way to go. There had been rabbits all over this area, when she did figure it out she would go with it and did circle 2 rabbits on her own. I could tell even when i couldnt see her what she was doing as when she was confused she sounded very different than when she was on the trail. I told my buddy who is a rabbit hunting rookie (even more so than me) that i thought this was her being a pup and she would grow out of it. I thought my older female (3 1/2) wasnt doing her job and coming to "honor" her bark. The last few times i have been out my pup has jumped many more rabbits than my other dog.

Later in the afternoon we went to another area that produced no rabbits and she never made a sound.

I feel a bit ignorant asking about this but i typically hunt alone and have nobody who is experienced to ask. If ANYONE have an opinion please tell me as i want to hear them all, good or bad.

Maybe she is a turd and i am just excited about her running them at so early an age.......it is early isnt it?

Thanks

At 7 months just give her a chance. It is not uncommon at all for a young dog to get over excited when into some good rabbit scent. As you described, you have had some though going earlier so this may be her first exposure to lots of rabbit scent all over. This is Hard for a veteran dog to straighten out sometimes. The fact she is not babbling in the area with no rabbit is a good sign.
It is also not uncommon for an older dog not to honor a pups strike. Older dogs just seem to know that sometimes it is not worth bothering to check on every puppy bark.
I would keep working with this one. It sounds like it may have a pretty good nose and may just turn into one of those super jump dogs you hear about.
Way to early to give up on a few puppy faults.

And by the way, don't forget to give us a report back in 2-3 months. I'd like to hear how she turns out.
Good Luck.

Maybe she is just a cold trailer running night tracks. Has she been doing this since she started or just on cold frosty mornings?

I still say if she is consitently getting the jumps first and barking when other aren't she may be smelling scent that others can't. That is not a fault. She will eventually figure out when to use the voice to complement the nose.

I agree, it's not uncommon for a pup. It seems like a pup has a more sensitive nose than an older dog, they don't have the "rabbit smarts" but they do have the nose.

A pup discovering it's nose is like a kid with a new toy, not sure how to use it yet but it looks like it's going to be fun.

She is a pup so I would give her a chance. I have a young male that has a stronger nose than my other dogs and will bark before they do but if I leave him alone he will jump the rabbit most of the time. I also discovered that he was working turkeys and the other dogs wouldn't bother them. You said she didn't bark that afternoon so she doesn't seem to be foolish.
