heat or false heat?

Post by beagleacres »

I have a 10 month old female that I thought was coming in heat......she was a bit swollen..but never got as swollen as my other gyp....she acted wierd.....and moody......but didn't have much discharge....does that mean that she never did come into season? Or am I just watching her too closely? I don't want to put her in the timber until I am sure she isn't in season. That would be really really stupid of me... :hammer: . DUH. But I don't know if she is just faking me out.....or just hasn't come in yet.....is there a way to tell??? I know its a silly question.....but I am rather new to the beagle thing....so would appreciate input without being totally slammed.....thanks in advance....

Younger females don't always have a "full" heat their first time. If I am ever unsure whether a female is in heat I always treat her as if she is and keep her kenneled up.

Treat her like she was or is in heat. Sometimes they will do just what you described and turn right around and come into a full heat without you really noticing it. Use caution, these females are something else.

I would also right down the dates that you noticed she maybe in heat. Six months can roll around before you know it, and a heat cycle can slip up on you.

beagleacres,
I have a young female that according to her first heat cycle she is due back in in December of this year but during the last week of October I noticed one of my males courting her and then I noticed a discharge for the next few days and no swelling. I was going to breed her and even had the brucellosis test done on her and was going to have her bred this weekend but the discharge stopped and she didn't swell and i tested her with one of my males that stays horny all the time and she would ride him but would not let him ride her and didn't curl her tail or anything when he smelled on her and he finally stoped paying any attention to her so I figured she had a false heat since she is not due in until december anyway. ANY OPINIONS ANYONE?
