Prefer 28 gauge auto, only prefer auto in case I have to do battle with coyotes, otherwise I would use single shot .410 of least weight possible. If I was in to killing rabbits for food I would use a .22 rifle and take only head shots so as to have the best meat possible. I hate to clean a rabbit and find old shot pellets in him. People leave a lot of wounded rabbits in the field that they don't even know they hit.

I use a tauras .410 revolver very nice to have both hands free to navigate through the brush .The pistol is amazingly accurate .

Magnum Research BFR .410 revolver. It's accurate and like mentioned before, a revolver leaves your hands free for handling dogs.

I use an old 20 gauge Fox / Stevens Model 311. Tried pumps, and semi-autos but none seemed to have the balance this one has.

I am currently using a Ruger single six, 9 1/2" bbl. Iron sights. Taking very, very selective shots. I am trying to put alot of solo time on individual hounds, so with only one or two dogs down you get some opportunities to shoot at rabbits with the 22. Only shoot if I know that bullet has a good backstop, or I don't shoot at all. Wouldn't want anyone else hunting with a 22 with me, but at least with me it is my responsability to take a safe shot, for mine and the dog's sake. 22 revolver= more run time, lol. I am 2 rabbits for 6 shots so far this year.

Took 4 hare with 5 shots from the 620 Franchi last week. I credit it to happening upon the right spot at the right time. My cousin tried all week and only got one chance when the hare burst between his feet in the thick growth of young spruce trees they were running in. Fewer hare, better races, less shots. I don't know how people kill so many, most days we only ran 3 or 4 hare all day, big runs. The hounds all have the backs of their pads wore off.
The old Ithaca 20ga. stayed home this year, it's traveled with me the last 37 years and done a great job. This Franchi is just as good and both don't rust when neglected and their lite weight means everything when packing all day. These are my top two picks for reliable, durable guns that weather the storms well... ;)... There are lots of nice guns but nonstraight shooting and rust is my pet peeve.
