I am sure this has been discussed in the past but I was unable to find it in a search. I was wondering how many of you field dress your rabbits in the field right after you shoot them and how many wait until you get home, and why. ( lol..sounds like an essay topic).

I don't shoot many rabbits but when I do, I'll grab them around the rib cage and squeeze the guts out the back end. It's fast and a lot less messy inside your game vest. The dogs like the hot meal too

We wait till we get home. Been doing it that way for years now. That's just how we've always done it.

We always field dressed them in the field right after they were shot. Growing up I thought everyone did that. Also, if the liver did not have spots it went to the dogs.

I field dress every rabbit as soon as possible after the kill. I don't want a gut shot rabbit soaking the meat that I plan to eat. I also cut the head off and hang it along with the guts in a tree. This makes each rabbit lighter to carry.

We squeeze the guts out right after every kill, makes for a lot lighter carry and burry the guts. I dont let the dogs eat them they can get tapeworms that way if the rabbit has them.

I usually field dress them when the dogs are not around to eat the guts. I don't like feeding the parasites in them to my dogs.

one of my dogs at some rabbit guts and got worms from it. I've tried the squeezing the guts out of the rear before. It just made a huge mess. And when we skinned the rabbit it was just nasty on the inside. That is why we have stayed away from that method.

Sometimes I will give a young dog the liver or heart to reward them. I don't do this much as I used to. In the past I would give the dogs the heart, liver, kidneys, and the lungs.

I don't shoot many rabbits but when I do they are placed in a plastic grocery bag before going into my game pouch. I also field dress them.

Usually carry a few plastic bags and place the skinned cleaned rabbits in them before they go into the game bag. Have also been known to skin the hind quarters and then just cut them and place them in the bag without even field dressing them. Usually depends on the shot. My buddies have known to blow a few up. How much meat do you get from the rest of the rabbit besides the hind quarters?

i don't dress the rabbits until the hunt is over and i'm ready to clean all of them.

there's quite a bit of meat on the rest of the rabbit. the backstraps are my favorite!
