Yellow Jackets

Post by BLUFFROCK KENNELS »

I had a dog killed by Yellow Jackets This past weekend. He was probably stung about hundred times. We got him to the vet, and had him back on his feet, but later on got worse again. Took him back to the vet but he wound up dieing. I have had dogs get into a nest of them before and get stung, but nothing like this. Has anyone ever heard of a dog getting stung bad enough to kill it?

sorry to hear about the loss. I had one stung about 25 times last month by yellow jackets. I gave her Benedryl and she was fine. I called the vet the next day and she said to give her Benadryl and look for the stingers that may still be in them, that they could get infected. Was the dog allergic like people, or just the amount of stings? Man, that sucks.

I got some benedryl down him as soon as I found him. That seemed to let him breath easier for a little while. He had quit breathing by the time we got to the vet, but the vet gave him a couple of shots quickly and got him back. We had him out in the yard walking around after that and he seemed like he was going to be fine. But then he still didn't look right so I took him back to the vet. They kept him overnight, but he didn't make it. They said that he would have to have been alergic to them, and that it was shutting his kidneys down. I am still sick about it. He won the open class at the UKC World Show about 3 weeks ago, and was turning out to be a nice rabbit dog. I had really high hopes for this dog.
