Problems with dogs eyes

Post by lab »

Seems like this past two weeks after running my dogs for 3 to 4 hrs when they come back in there eyes are matted shut and the next day they walk around like they are blind. I know Ragweed and other weeds will make this happen but I have never seen it this bad. It is not because we have not had rain. 15 inches in a week. Just wondering if anyone else is having this much problem.

I have been having the same problem in my 12 acre enclosure. Within one day their eyes will be awful. I clean them out and apply medication. Mine seem to be wearing the hair off around their eyes, nose, ears etc. quickly. The ones with natural length tails are beating the ends off. It has to be the grass and weeds. I have serecia in my pen also. That is hard on them especially after it dries. It sure is good for the rabbits.

We're having the same problems here, but we have attributed it to the arid conditions and the weeds. The serecia has always been hard on the dogs, but it seems much worse when it's dry. We flush their eyes with saline solution and apply terramycin ointment. They're usually good to go in a day or two.

When we have this problem our vet told us to just give a benadryl. It doesn't hurt the dog and it makes their eyes clear up in no time.

This is common this time of year, be careful of the seeds that can get in a dogs eye from the dry serecia. Take some eye wash with you or a bottle of bottled water, when you finish running flush out each dogs eyes and that will prevent any debris from piling up in them. Some of them will still be swollen and matted, but they will be okay. clean their eyes when you get up in the morning with fresh cool water and it will make it less bothersome for the dog.

TC gave you a good solution. Any chance your dogs are running into tall grass and getting their eyes cut?
