Post by chris fuson »

i was told that this was very hard on there kidneys and stomach? i was actually told that it would literally burn there stomach and kidneys up? how many poeple use this? what do you think about it and have you had any problems out of it? i was told that if it was injected or shout down there mouth it was even worse? is this true or just a bunch of b.s.? the only reason why i am asking is an older guy that has had beagles for 50 years was told by his vet that the ivermec had killed 2 of his dogs by destroying there kidneys? i know the he didnt overdose thm or anything. he has quti uing it and went to something else and he says he hasnt had another problem...........just wondering? thanks

I have used it for many years with no problems. I just gave it to 48 dogs this afternoon. I have a retired vet friend who has also used it for many years with no problems. The active ingredient in the "something else" that the man switched to is probably ivermectin and probably came from the vet at a much higher price. Some vets agree with using Ivomec yet most want to sell their product. It's all about money most of the time.

Look at the ingredents in HeartGard & you will see it's ivermec. My vet and I talked about this back in the 80's ,told me how to use it what what not to use it on ( Collie breds ). I've seen lots of dose rate posted on here like 1/10cc per 10lbs but my vet told me to only use 1/10cc per dog period for hartworms. I've used this product at this dosage for 20+ years with no ill effects. Now I have had 1 bitch that had kidney failure about 5 yrs ago & had to put her down but my vet truely belives this was due to the way we as houndsmen keep our hounds , lean ,hardley any body fat and high protein feed and I belive he's right. Now all this is what I've been told by my vet & what I've done for 20 + yrs and has work for me , I've also saw some vet school studies on this topic some time back & none that I saw disagreed if I can find where I saw these I'll post it , but as I've told everyone I've talked to about this talk to your vet & I think if you have a good 1 that isn't trying to drain your wallet he'll tell this to be the truth.

I've heard the same rumors, about problems to the kidneys, but my vet said it was okay to use. But I appreciate the guys saying they only use 1/10cc period or even a little less. I run little dogs that around 20 to 22 lbs and have always given the 1/10cc per ten pounds. I'll probably start giving them less, like the other two gentleman have stated.

It will eat a hole right through them if you give them too much of it.... NO MORE than 1/10 of a cc... It is a small dose and most ppl can't see how that little of an amount would be effective but it is...... The guys who have killed there dogs are the people giving 1 to 5 ccs a month. That is BAD for your dog. It would be like you taking 6000 mg of ibuprofin at a time..... just a couple drops fellas....
God isn't real, Beer is good and people are crazy, there I fixed it.

The big problem with ivermectin is that it is strong. That makes it easy to overdose.
Most people don't weigh their dogs, and many have the attitude of "A little extra won't hurt them".

Wormers are poison.
It poisons the worms to kill them. The key is to give the dose to kill the worm, but not enough to cause damage to the dog.
So you are essentially giving your dog poison once a month. I do it too, but carefully.
Also, you have to remember dogs are like people.

How come some smokers get cancer, and other don't?
Beagles as a breed are known to have kidney problems. Some have strong kidneys, others do not.
Those same dogs might have died with or without the ivermectin treatment.
Maybe the ivermectin knocked a couple years off their life.

I'll continue to poison my dogs from April to October, but I will continue to do it very carefully.
