Dog won't come to Pack

Post by Bigguy »

Hey Everybody

I have a young dog that is just started to hunt pretty well solo. The problem is when I take her out with other dogs she has no interest in what the other dogs do. When they open up on a rabbit she doesn't even look in their direction. She just continues to hunt on her own. Any Ideas?

Thanks

I had a male like that and the only way I got him to start packing was I took him out with 2 more of my other dogs and I had them on a leash I would jump the rabbit for them so they all would smell him at the same time then I would turn them all loose and after a couple times like that he started packing great but he was younger then and now he's became my best jump dog so they all pack to him now. It may have just been luck maybe it can work for you.

Packing

Old timers advice for what it`s worth . Some will some won`t. But all of them has to be given the chance to change or correct them selves . My cure for this was kennel the dog in same pen with broke dog then run them together untel he starts checking other dog . And he will in time then start takeing both dogs with other dogs the broke dog will honer the pack and hopefully he will honer the broke dog. This all takes time .Just don`t give up after A few times out.
The view is all ways the same from behind.

I have had some luck by keeping the young dog on the leash while the others jump and track the rabbit. When they are running the rabbit and the young dog gets excited, pet him for it and try to get him really excited. Try to work him into a frenzy. Don't pet him if he pays no attention to them. Sweet talk him and pet him and act real excited when he pulls on the leash to go. After a minute or so, cut him loose and he should go to the other dogs. May take a time or 2 but by doing this he learns what you want him to do. Some just will never pack of course and depends on their genetics.

I advise you hold the other dogs and let this one jump a rabbit then turn the pack in on his jump so they will go to him.

Could be bloodlines causing the problem. Do you know how she is bred? What is behind her?

I STILL HAVEN'T GOTTEN MY BEAR DOG TO PACK & I'VE TRIED EVERYTHING. I THINK IT'S BECAUSE THEY ARE TRAINED SOLO & ARE NOT DEPENDENT ON ANOTHER DOG. HE HAS McCLEESE'S DUCK, CLOSE CALL GIRL, THE ELM'S JIGGS & INDIANHILL LEESA, SO I DON'T THINK BLOODLINE IS HIS PROBLEM.

My question is, How do you kennel her? I start most of mine solo in a starting pen and they seem to do fine so far. Sometimes you get one that is like that for some reason. Try kenneling her up with one other dog and running them as a pair a few times. I think it is all trust mostly. Once she trusts them enough to go to them, she should do fine.
