Good MPG hunting vehicles

Post by bradadkins »

I gotta get something cheaper on fuel. Was wondering what kinda mileage you were getting in your truck. Does anyone have a 4 cylinder Tacoma? how do they do? was looking into them. Or maybe even a Tracker 4x4 and pull a dog trailor with it. I love my Chevy truck but 80 dollars a fillup is not flying with me. Any suggestions on what to look into?

thanks

I think the close as you can come is a Colorado with a 5 cyl. I have a Chevy Tracker with a 4cyl. and get 28mpg on the highway. A little cramped for my full figured body but its OK until the deep snow hits. I made a dog box to fit in the back by just standing the back seats straight up. All of the gear goes in the back seats.

Some guys posted about being in the military and seeing diesel Ford Rangers in Europe, but with the price of diesel I'm not sure about the tradeoff. Brad, I feel your pain. I have an older F-150 ext. cab and my last fillup was $72.00. It's paid for so my reasoning is that I can buy a lot of gas for the $5oo a month payment involved in a new one, so I'm stuck for now unless someone wants to trade a 30 mpg Tracker to it!!! Good luck, and I am interested as to where this thread will go as well. I wonder why we couldn't claim Iraqi oil when we kicked Saddam's butt out or back in '90 why we couldn't have gotten oil for kicking him out of Kuwait or why we don't do a couple of flyovers on the whiny dicatator of Venezuela, make him soil his pants and run away and rename it New Texas. In a perfect world, I guess.

I own two four wheel drive trucks a 2005 dodge quad cab and a 1989 jeep comanche, bought the jeep to hunt out of,its a 6 banger 5 speed, it gets great gas milage and keeps the wear and tear off the new truck, only problem I have with the jeep is it dont have any ground clearance. so I keep a tow strap in the truck for the times I get stuck like chuck. my thinking at the time of purchase was spend 1500 to 2000 for older truck and keep the repairs off the new truck which would be more expenses, besides its a lot easier to work on the older truck .

I have a 95 Tacoma 4 cylinder. It has been a good truck. The only major thing I have done is replaced the leaf springs when one side broke. I also had a Rhino lining put in it a few years ago. The place I run is well off the road and I have to ride on rutted logging roads and through mud holes. The mileage overall is not as good as I would like, I get maybe 22 mpg on mostly short trips. I have not taken the Toyota on a road trip in a while, but it used to get 25 mpg on the highway. I use 4 wheel drive at least once a week sometimes more if it rains.

My son has the Toyota Tacoma 4x4 with auto trans. He gets around 21 mpg around town.

I'm OK with the mpg on my full size. It's the Chevy crew cab 4x4 with the 4.8 V8. It gets 18mpg in town and 21 on the open road. Ed Ponder told me about adding a chip for even better mpg on the full size.

It may be something for me to look into.

is the tracker you guys have the newer body style or the older ones? I gotta get a 4x4 that will get close to 30 mpg..I have talked to several Tacoma owners and they get just about 21 or clsoe to it..I need better than that. If I could find a sidecar I'd let Fred ride in it to trials LOL

Fuel keeps raising and there has to be a point to where we can't afford to drive. I make a decent living but it makes it hard on your budget just to live comfortably. they keep wondering why the economy i so bad..I got 2 words for ya...HIGH GAS

Brad my Tracker is a 2001 4 door 4x4 with a 4 banger. And it would most likely win any ugly truck award. Hit 2 deer and let them run around on Michigan dirt roads and highway salt and you have the rest.

I have a "06" Tacoma 6cyl auto 4x4.I get 18 mpg on the highway but I have a heavy foot.I have seen 19.5 mpg being conservative on the gas pedal.Cost around $40 to fill up right now.

I have a 06 Chevy Colorado with the 5 cylinder auto Z71 package with a Regal box in back and average about 22 mpg. Not to bad for a 4 wheel drive and has a class 3 hitch which I pull a 20 ft center console fishing boat with no problem. Gas in MD is still a killer as it is everywhere.....

Brad it is an auto. You aint even gonna tow the kids little red wagon down hill, but it is extremely nimble on the trails and in the mud/snow. They even sell lift kits and performance parts for them. Mine is stock, I drive 43 miles oneway to work. I bought it of off a security company for $219 with a tick in the motor. Put $300 into her with a motor out of a 04 with less than 10,000 (totalled) and down the road I go.... Again not the most roomy thing for a guy 6' and 275 and his hunting buddies 6'4" 240 and the other 6'1" and bigger than me. Hunt with big guys that way if you get stuck you just pick it up and carry it with you.

I made the cut last year.Had a z71 chevy extended cab loaded.sold it and bought a ford ranger extened cab two wheel drive about 22 m.p.g. :( I miss my my chevy this ford is not half the truck but instead of $70 a week I can go on $45. and still run hounds the same amount.I would rather give up a nice truck than my hounds     Ken
