Dirty Laundry - Advice Needed

Post by beaglerun »

The two videos below are 2 of my 1 1/2 year old females. The first video is where they jumped the rabbit and I am going to follow them out and sit down. The second video is of them on the return. You will see the rabbit come back and turn to the right. The dogs are going to come back and turn (overrunning the line in my opinion) and run the first line they ran coming in. They do figure it out and eventually pick the rabbit up, but by then I had gotten angry and stopped taping.

They have been doing this off and on since the end of rabbit season. It hasn't always been like this and I don't know if there is anything I can do about it.

Please help, and don't be afraid to say that I need to cull. I've already blacken my eye by putting this on the board :blackeye: . So all of my shame is gone.

I wouldn't cull them out yet, yeah they had a break down after the rabbit passed by, but they are young and from that video they have tons of desire. Keep running them, they will only improve and more forward. Good Luck

For only 1 1/2, and they are learning! I agree with Harner on this one. These dogs look like they have the desire! It just takes a few more of those tricks by the rabbit before those young dogs learn to put 2 and 2 together. They look like keepers to me for now.

I don't see nothing wrong with them.

My opinion is this. You are running in open woods and from my experiance which isn't much compared to most on this board but running thru open woods scenting isn't at it's best espically on leaves. My dogs struggle to in open woods depends on the scenting condition aswell. My best runs are in thick weeds and briars as the rabbit travels thru the scent sticks that doesn't happen in open woods and on leaves with the wind blowing the scent around. Of course it will be harder on the dogs. But they will learn to deal with that you just got to keep them learning in that type of terrain.

just as long as they got back on track that's a good thing

i can put up some video of my dogs in open woods if you like

heck just this past weekend the rabbit was running a mud path the only thing you could see on the mud was the nail print in the mud of the rabbit. That thru the dogs off. I think as the rabbit was running so fast only his nails were hitting the ground instead of his whole foot that made it much harder on the dogs because they had trouble with it. It was in open woods too.

Thick cover the rabbit scent sticks to the grass and weeds as he trucks thru it creating strong scent trail. open woods scent is just all over harder for the dogs that could be why they took off on the previous path. But older experianced dogs should no the differance

Thanks guys. I will continue to feed them for now. I have to remind myself that they are not finished dogs yet. You are all right about their desire. That's what I like about them best. I have three of them, and they are all the same way. They go through briars at full throttle! As long as a rabbit is in briars and brush, it doesn't stand a chance of getting away. It's the open woods and bare ground that gives them a fit. If they would just slow down a little, I think they will be alright.

Harner's Hound, I love the quotes you have at the bottom of your post. Tombstone is one of my favorite movies. I think I'll go pop it in right now. :D

Just keep them in the woods and in that type of situation. they will catch on.

If they were older dogs I assume that they would have probably took off on that track then about 2 or 4 feet into it they would have said HEY wait a minute this is old scent turn back around and check for the hot scent. That is what I think would have happened with older dogs in that situation.

I also find that with my dogs in open woods like that they have more break down's. But they keep the rabbit on the move. Now if it's a damp day and all the stars are lined up the dogs can straight hammer in open woods at a very fast pace. It's all about scenting conditions.

Overly competitive is your problem in my opinion. Solo each hound for a while, which will boost each one's confidence and skill level. I know it's not near as fun.

Thanks Gang,

Thats my plan for this off season. I am trying to run them solo at least once a week, and as a pack every two weeks. In June I'll be able to run them more during the week.

I disagree with everyone on this board that has posted. In fact, I will do you a favor and take both those junk hounds off your hands. Can't believe you would feed that junk. Send them to me in Ky and you will never have to worry about them again!

Seriously, I really DO agree with every reply that you have gotten. They are running in the open, they are young, and they are very competitive. The hound bringing up the rear in the 2nd video was "me-tooing" on the check, though it was a short one. I suspect that they swap the front regularly, as they appear evenly matched. I agree that they need solo time. Not only solo time, but running separate from one another with other packs of hounds. Those two will do you proud in time. Remember the discussion on the board about the age that hounds are their best? Hounds that are 1-1/2 are teenagers, and we all know how teenagers act sometimes, being teenagers ourselves in the past. Good video and good question.

Thanks DRamey,

I will add running them with a pack without each other to my list. A buddy of mine (Wrightboy) has some great dogs that I like for them to run with. Perhaps we'll be able to get together and run some.

All three of my dogs have been very competitive since one of them came in heat. They did the same thing about six months ago. One is on her way out now, and the next should be be coming in a week or two. The last one comes in about two weeks after the second. They settle down a lot after their heat cycles.
