Re: patch hounds
It has been my experience that "Plowboy", Rockwood, Tenn. has outstanding hounds if you are looking for hunt, guts, and intelligence. The rest would depend on what you like in size, speed and color.
Re: patch hounds
I bought one from the Darrell Shildt line out in Altoona,pa 6 mos and hunts very hard

You may want to first figure out what you want to run .
There's slower Patch with better line control and there's
fasssster Patch with less line control .

Re: patch hounds
Sam,
We went out and ran with Darrell a few weeks ago. His Smoke dog is a nice hound, we will probably breed one of our females to him down the road. We also saw 2 dogs out of Smokey and Shildt's Amberpatch run (Willy and a female I can't remember her name) they were very impressive for 15 months. Darrell said that Jim Campbell took the pups up to Drummond this fall for 3 weeks and they held up great running everyday, he was pretty excited about them. We ended up buying Shildt's Amberpatch off of him and are really pleased with her. Plan to breed her to our Dozer male when she comes in.

Re: patch hounds
Patch,
Smoke is out of 2 hounds from Montana who were both purchased from Superior Patch kennel. Darrell said he needed a little different blood. His dam is Hellroaring Pearly Girl out of Superior Patch Daego (I think he's from Capozzi) crossed with Superiorpatch Sierra. His sire is Hellroaring Rattler out of Superior Patch Cane x JLT Calico Rose Patch. He was the only one of the litter that wasn't Lemon/white.

Re: patch hounds
Hi guys I have a pup out of smoke like I stated a couple of posts ago but got a question My 7 mos old pup hunts very hard and runs well barking on the trail but her checks are a little bit off. seems that when she gets to far off check she gives up and looks for another rabbit. I talked to several guys at an SPO trial and they said this is how patch hounds are bad line control and checking. I hope with age she gets better at this what do you guys think

Re: patch hounds
If you follow your pup, when she checks stay at the area of the check, if she ventures off to far or gives up, call her back to the check and encorage her to "find it".
She is young and learning so don't be to hard on her. She has to learn to work a weak scent, not all is easy going. Watch her actions, if she show interest, stay quiet and don't move. If she works the area out but still seems lost, work her in direction of most likely escape the rabbit took and keep watching her actions for interest in scent. Patch hounds will not anchor, they hunt with a sense of urgency to get up on their game. She is struggling between her nature and what little she knows of the game. As she learns to use her gifts and how the game is played, she should more regulate her actions.
Best of luck and keep feeding rabbit tracks...
