14 month old hound quitting to find me?

This is the first time i have run into this situation, i have been running hounds for over 30 years. I have a 14 month old female who can run a rabbit pretty good has a great nose and listens very well , but she has started quitting a track to come and look for me. It seems that if she can;t see me she gets nervous. It even happens when im running her with an older hound. She is from great breeding and has great potential, but this problem is pissing me off. Today the running was good so there was no reason for her to come out, the other hounds were hammering but she still had to find me and after awhile she just wouldn't leave. Any sugestions im stumped???????????? :hammer: :bomb:

Just ignore her she'll get bored . Or better yet leave her in the box while the other dogs are running the hair off one. Either way she will get the message.

she might be getting slamed around or she may be coming into heat. it could be alot of reason, next time she comes back site down and put the led on her, and dont let her go. she should start pulling hard when she here's the pack.

or she may just be a quiter, and u may have to cut your losses.

If you find the answer, let me know. I have a young male that acts similar. He won't quit while the chase is going but on a long check he will come back, hang around me, and then hunt for another rabbit. If the pack solves the check he may or may not go back. I think he is insecure and lacks drive and determination. He has until next season to improve his game. He is an excellent hound otherwise, great nose, close line work for his speed, and honest mouth plus he jumps a lot of rabbits. One day he is a brag dog the next time out he is a cull. :annoyed:

Had the same problem. leaving her in the box didn't seem to work, gave her to a friend's son. anyway she started hunting again, but started running silent, thats what I've heard, and that was not like her. When she ran as a year old. Opened quick, ran with a mission. Broke my heart
Life is to short,

could be a sign of over handling or a lack of confidence. should grow out of it.

I was thinking along the same lines. I'll try to explain overhandling first.

Last spring and summer, I was running my dogs 3-4 times a week. I hunt with my dogs close by until they jump a rabbit. While I am working them I make all kinds of noise. Once the rabbit is up, I am pretty much silent. My dogs wouldn't hear my voice again until they were in a long check, and I could catch up with them; or if I was calling them back for some reason.

When hunting season came in, I hunted them pretty much the same way. The only difference (a big difference) was that once the rabbit was jumped I would start running my mouth with my buddies; Laughing and cutting the fool. I noticed that my dogs were coming back to me, and hunting all over again. I was puzzled. I started to reflect and I observed a change in me, not the dogs.

The dogs had learn that the sound of my voice meant that they should be near by. They were only doing what I had inadvertently taught them. I quickly fixed the problem by running them solo and taking somebody with me that loves to talk. That way they learned to ignore our conversation. Check your routine to make sure your not doing anything that woud cause her to start coming back.

Now lack of confidence:

Try taking the dog (solo) to the same spot for a while. Let her hunt and venture out as much as possible. Start cutting back on the praise you give her until she doesn't pay you any attention. In fact you may have to do the same for her. When she comes back to you, just don't pay her any attention. Act as if she isn't even there. If you have a friend who knows the dog, let them run her, while you sit in the truck.

Just my 2 cents.

Either she hasn't come to trust you'll be there when she goes off or something has her spooked.
We had one spot up at PatkFalls the hounds would not get out and hunt and their hackles were all up. Figured they must have been smelling bear or wolf, never had them act like that before.
If it's a trust issue, time will cure it as she learns to trust you being there for her and rabbit fever over takes her... or, maybe she trust you more then the other hounds she's running with...again, time, experience and maturity should build a bridge...;)

Thanks guy's for all the responses. Her feet are fine and she is in great shape. I have run her solo many times she does the same thing but not as bad. There's one thing that i was thinking, the snow up here is very deep now and it's hard for the hounds to run side by side they have to run single file down the rabbit trail. Im thinking that if she can't be in front she quits and comes to find me. Thats no excuse, a hound should persue no matter how hard it gets as far as im concerned. She still is young and im not giving up on her yet. Her mother was one of the best hounds I have ever owned. I quess time will tell. ( P.S. I treat her the same as all 14 of my other hounds.)

I'd try a switch and then if that don't work a good gut stomping.

It does not alway work, but you can try this: Whenever she comes back put her on a lead and attach it to a tree. Then, move toward the pack and let her stuggle against the lead to go with you and/or the rest of the pack. I usually go atleast out of sight. Just do not forget her or where you tied her - LOL! Release her at the end of that race and let he rejoin the pack until she stops pulling out. I do this for saftey reasons when a beagle quits for (whatever reason)during a hunt as I do not want them moving around without barking.

Hey Pal, we'll have none of that!!! Besides, a bootwarmer comes in handy when it's cold... ;)
My uncle used to toss them into the briars to get them away from him, then wonder why he couldn't catch them... ... young hounds had little chance around him...as he'd say, "they may not do much but they :censored: well better be out there trying... ... he was the type that you thought was going to kill a hound for any sin committed, then, after the hound was long gone would say, I miss that ole dawg...so he saw the good but his fuse was cut shorter than any man I've known and many times his actions were cause for more harm than good...
