Bad teeth cause infection, which in some cases can kill the dog.
Most of the time, it will cause the dog to be poor. The dog is fighting infection, plus having trouble eating all it needs because it hurts to chew. Some types of infections can cause damage to the heart.

A dog with bad teeth is not healthy. It is always taking away from the dog.

Cost on cleaning changes from vet to vet. They need to be put under, so it is not cheap. $150 in my area. Beagles tend to have heavy tarter because alot tend not to chew their food well.

I've used CET ENZYMATIC Toothpaste with great results. Seems to work fast on built up tartar.

I normally clean my dogs teeth myself. You can get the scraper tools from the feed store. The trick is not to let it build up as much. You also need a pair of plairs. You will need some help holding the dog. I use the plairs to grip the tooth and I twist back and forth the tarter will break off. Do this for the back teeth and use the scraper tool for front teeth. The scraper is the tool that is stainless steel is the same as denist have. Be careful with the players on the teeth.

I use a product called Frageria Vesca that you put in your dogs water, it will help loosen the tartar and is good for your dogs teeth and gums. You get 680 little pellets for 14.00 and use 3-4 every time you change their water.
From the website:

"Fragaria Vesca is used for softening and removing tartar and dental plaque off teeth. Use for all ages and don't forget your pets. Pets can suffer from plaque build up and regular use of Fragaria Vesca can help.
Can use for pets and other animals by putting 3 pellets in water dish or in food. Economy 680 pellets in a 1 oz bottle.
When more help is needed brush onto teeth. This method can also be used for animals: place 10 pellets in 1/2 cup of water and let sit for 5 minutes, then remove pellets and brush liquid onto teeth. Do new batch for each animal. Brush on teeth after each meal for problem teeth. Sucrose base, no alcohol. $13.99 "

Buy it here: http://www.elixirs.com//products.cfm?productcode=S33C

I also use a scraper tool carefully.....you don't want to remove the enamel. Sometimes a trip to the vet is in order if the dog has red, receeding gums...if your dog shakes it's head while eating that is another indication of tooth ache.... :blackeye:
