I hear a lot of people talking about meds/vitamins you can give older hounds for stiff joints, etc. What are some good ones you can by at the local co-op or pet store?

the best thing ive found that you can get easy and most dogs will take to is the hip and joint treats walmart sales compare it to most of the joint vitamens you see. there pretty well the same ingredients except these are liver flavored treats so you want have to cram a pill down teh dogs neck. ive used them on several old dogs and seems they do get around better been using them on one male for about a year. and at $2.12 for a pack its not to bad.

Glucosomine (250mg) is your best bet. You will be amazed. K

Thanks, this is for a roughly 40 lb. blue austrailian cattle dog, he's getting up there in age and the vet said arthritis is taking hold. He walks like he's stiffining up a little also.

The vet can prescribe Rimadyl. I have used it with older dogs in the past. Leah of Windkist said that it is an anitinflammatory like Motrin but safe for dogs. It worked well with a 15 yr old female that i once had. Still hurts to think about her. She died on Thanksgiving day 2001. She had lived during the 80's, 90's and into the 21st c. the Rimadyl made her noticeably more active and less stiff afterward.

Thanks. Is aspirin safe to give long term and if so, how many mg should be given?

Dramey - I heard about Rimadyl, what did it cost and how long did it last for? That's what my buddy was giving his dog, but ran out. It sounds like that may have been his best bet.

Too bad your dog might have arthritis, have you spoke to your vet about glucosomine? Horses, humans, dogs take it. (for humans, one aspirin is 325mg, one glucosomine tablet 1500mg) Ask your vet about glucosomine. It's a repair agent. I used to give to my horse and it did wonders. He was very lame and after two weeks was moving freely (21 years old). I've had family members take it too and found it to be helpful. Just check, see what you think.

Cool, I think you can get Rimadyl in generic and it's not very expensive, about like a bottle of prescription Ibuprofen in a generic. You may want to check online for it.

The dog in question is a blue heeler (Austrailian Cattle dog) that weighs about 45 lbs. Flexenhance has glucosomine and creotine in it. He's giving that now. I think it was Rimydal the vet originally prescribed, it was an anti-inflamatory med.
