I had my first ever run in with a coyote last night. I was out running in my normal spot and after about 30 minutes I heard a strange bark followed by a howl about 300 yards out. The dogs were pounding at the time but I knew what it was right away. He was on his way in and barking and yipping the whole way. I shocked the dogs off of the rabbit and lead them to the truck, but the coyote kept coming. He hung up about 60 yards from the truck, but would not leave. he stayed there and barked and yipped for about 30 minutes. I walked in on him and he would run off a ways but as soon as I would head back to the truck he would get closer. He needs killed, but it is in the city limits. I knew there was one or two that passed through there, but I had never run into them before last night. Any suggestions on how to get him without shooting. If it is a controversial method send me a PM.

Without killing 60% of the pack useless so the game wardens say. I have been cutting up sponges and soaking them in bacon grease with pretty good sucess. But keep away from ur spot for at least 30 days. There is always a peta freak close so be careful shooting any in city limits. Good luck.

to come down and run with you.

Find someone with a decoy dog in your area.
That will turn the tables on the coyote, from hunter to hunted.
Airedale, cur, or some other gritty dog that will kill it.

we run at night alot in the summertime and have similar expieriences. It seems like they are not even afraid of you.You may want to try snaring them.Just make sure you dont run dogs while they are set.I have had decent success this year using snares.

Bigdog,
I had the same thing happen to me a couple of times. In fact one coyote chased my dogs all the way back to the house. He saw me when he chased them across the road; he just looked at me and continued chasing the dogs. When I called the SC DNR they told me that the coyote had gotten used to being around people and wasn't afraid of people or dogs any longer. They also warned me not to try to get rid of him because that would probably make the situation worse.
According to them when a big dominant male is taken care of, more aggressive-younger males move in. These younger-aggressive males usually do more damage to wildlife and hounds than the older male. I don't know if it's true or not, but I would like for somebody to do something about the number of coyotes we have in SC.

how about a wrist rocket/ high power slingshot .... use steel balls like the size of a marble . the things have a rediculous amount of power the box says deadly to 200 yards and i believe it . they used to sell them at all sporting goods store in CA i had one as a kid but i think they have been banned or something . get the one that folds down and has the brace which goes to your arms ... my buddy took a rabbit at the beach with one must of been a lucky shot . I think a coyote size target would be no problem. even if it doesn't die it will sure be scared to come around you anymore .

coyote kiling hound sounds best to me. I know a dairy farmer that did the thing with the trebel hooks. It worked and he killed quite a few, but i am not for that. i hunt anything i can and hate coyotes but i hate to see any animal die in an agonizing manner. If they are coming in that close shoot em with a bow if ya can see em.

That is the opposite of everything I have read and heard about coyotes (I've been reading quite a bit about coyotes in the last year).
It is the big dominant males that are attacking dogs because they are in their territory. That is why decoy dogs are so much more effective to get the call wise coyotes into gun range. They see another male dog in their territory and they are going to kill it or run it out.
Trapping a coyote is hard, they are very wise animals. Snares are probably the most effective, but run a high risk of getting non-target animals (domestic dogs).
