Pulled a smooth one - left rabbit in game bag for a week

A week ago we had some new hunters with us, and 2 of them didn't have a game bag.
So I ended up being the mule, hauling around their rabbits.
Every time we went to another spot, I would unload them out of the game bag at the truck.

I only shot one rabbit letting the new guys do all the shooting. I go home, clean my rabbit, and went on about my business.
One rabbit got under a brush pile after the shot, and a dog went in and ate the head before we could get them out.
I dropped it into my bag. Shortly after, the guy who shot it left.

Fast forward to this Saturday
I hop out of the truck, put my vest on, load my gun and say "Shoooo, someone must have dumped a deer carcass around here". The dogs were running a rabbit, and I go over the hill about 100 yards. I tell a guy, "There is something dead around here". He said, "Yeah, I smell it now".

We get up on the ridge, I shot a rabbit and had it hanging in a tree giving time for the fleas to jump off.
I smell it again. I thought, "I'm half mile from the truck and still smell it" :-o
The lightbulb came on, I reached back and felt a familiar lump in my game bag.
Took it off, pulled a headless rabbit out. :mad2: :loser:
I used all my toilet paper wiping the liquid portion of the rabbit out of my game bag. No wonder I smelled something dead

The game vest had been in the front seat of my truck all week long, I guess it stayed frozen the whole time is the reason I hadn't smelled it sooner. Good thing I didn't bring it into the house.

Be glad it wasn't the last hunt of the season. :) I did that with a quail one year. It was so small that even though I stored my coat in the basement it never smelled that we were aware of.

Bag it up and send to the guys looking for cat bait. LOL....

just kidding, boy were you lucky. A little warmer and your truck would smell just as bad.

Well I figure if you are going to go out and shoot rabbits you could atleast remember to take it out of your vest. That's a rabbit wasted, that won't be ran again and can't breed to produce more.

Come on now bbk11, we've all done something stupid at one point or another. Well, maybe you're perfect  but I'm pretty sure the rest of us have screwed up at some point.

We all hate to waste an animal and I'm sure he didn't mean to do it but after this I'm also sure he'll double check his game bag.

Yep, that's me Mr. Wasteful, shoot everything in the woods and leave it in my game vest to rot.
You can smell me coming.

I am not a mental giant, so walk through the thought process of my feeble mind so you might understand.
I shot one rabbit, I got to the truck and dropped it off.
I am with two new shooters (6 total hunters), they kill quite a few rabbits.
We are killing quite a few, I am packing most of them around.
I am dropping them off at the truck when we change spots.
A 15 year old shot the rabbit in my vest.
An hour or so later he leaves with his grandpa to go predator hunting.
We continue to hunt for a few hours.
We get done, load up the dogs, drive off the hill, transfer dog box, vest, gun, gear, etc. from friend's truck to my truck.
I drop another friend off on the way home. I stop by neighbor's house to drop off 2 dogs I ran for him. I Go home, put my dogs up, an unload truck.
I've got one dead rabbit (the only one I shot), gun, coat, and thought, "Hands are full, so I'll just leave vest in the truck".
I go in, clean my rabbit, put my stuff up, eat, and relax.

I really hate leaving a rabbit in my vest, I prefer to throw them in my attic and let it stink up the whole house.
Occasionally I'll throw one under the couch to surprise my wife.

I left a couple of dead bass from a club tournament in my live-well once. When I opened the well a couple of weeks later - I REMEMBERED! I tried picking them up with channel locks but they both fell apart and I had to remove the in several pieces each. I was better at remembering after that experience!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
