Hello everyone,
My name is brandon im 21 and i love to hunt Deer, squirrle. I wish i could be out there every decent day in the year, I have been interested in rabbit hunting sense i met my fiance's brother"Inlaw" 3 years ago. I finally got the chance and i am at the point in my life where i can keep a hunting dog. 2 weekends ago I got one shes 11 months old and has turbo and branko in her blood. I dont know anything about rabbit hunting and will not lie about it . (Just looking for some info.) She is pretty much comfortable around me now and will come to my call when shes in the yard. so i think im gonna take her out real soon and see what she can do. The guy i got her from said she started to run rabbits. ( What are some do's and dont's, and what does it mean by "check" what should I teach her and what should she learn on her own)

sorry this was so long, I will take every input in to great consideration and with respect, I want to be good at this.

Brandon a check is when a hound loses the scent of a rabbit and has to stop forward progress on the track.A hound should work a check out until
it figures out which way the rabbit turned.You will find out there is hounds out there that will work a tight check and hounds that will swing out of
the check area to pick up on the scent again.

Your best bet for a nice handling hound is to do your "yard work", you said she comes to you when you are in the yard. Keep working on that, it will pay off once you are in the field. The hunt in your dog will just take practice and time, so keep going out and you will both learn each and every time you go out.

11 mo. is still pretty young,so have lots of patience,Keep doing what your doing.when your dog gets older and starts running make sure that it doesn`t run deer.have fun. It`s addicting.

one of the best investments you can make if youve not already is a shock collar if she has
good hunt and loves to run a rabbit they sometimes need a little bump to remind them who
is boss they also come in handy when they are young and decide to run one
of those long legged rabbits.

Update!! Took my dog out this weekend and let her do her thing in the field. She just sniffed a little bit and looked kinda confussed. About 45 mins my brotherinlaw jumped a rabbit and called for her, she got right on the scent and took off behind him jawing bits here and there. After about 10 mins she gave up or lost the sent but i think she did good at least i know there is potential.

Is this little female out of Sport and Ashley?

My little female out of this cross is coming on strong. She is still around 11 to 12", but i have been running her everyday since she opened. She has pretty good foot speed and has a big nose. The best thing you can do is solo, solo, solo, and then solo her some more!!!! Keep working with her in the yard everyday, and build a bond with her. If i'm right this pup was chased by a yote or something???? So, she will need a little extra time to get back to where she was. Terry knows what he is doing, so listen to him! Turbo's are late starters, by that i mean you will not see the dogs true potential until they are around 2 years old. Ask Terry about how many times he almost sold Misty!!! That dog was horrible to get started, and he called me at least twice a week saying that he was going to sell her. Long story short, i don't think you could get that dog out of his hands now.

I have also seen the other female out of this cross (3 females). She is coming on strong too. Her name is Cali, and a guy named Andy owns her. We ran the two pups together a couple of weeks ago and the two did a really nice job. If you want to know anything about the parents just give me a call or PM me.

I think your right Eddy if you like to start them that early. It shouldn't take that long to see what you have, but i have seen several of these dud's that guys have given up on become late bloomers. The best one i can piont out is Terry's female Misty. That dog was amost a joke to take out and would have been a cull with 99% of the guys on here, but Terry stayed with her and she has become a really fast clean running rabbit machine. In this case you have a young guy, with his first dog, who wants to learn as much as he can. The female came from Barnhart. She can run a rabbit, but was spooked by a yote, so she needs a little more attention than what most dogs need. Or, more attention than what you or I would have the time to give considering we already have 4 or five running dogs. i hope that makes sense??? I think this pups is in a perfect place to get what she needs.

I believe a boy starting in beagling needs a broke older dog grade or whatever to start with 7 or 8 1 that is cheap he can run and learn ,then he can get a pup or a dog that needs work, starting out with something like this can be enough to make them want to quit if the dog has too many problems .my opinion

I agree eddy, this is one case where you need to see the rewards from time spent with a dog before you jump into starting one all on your own. I'm not knocking on you Grassnrabbits, I think it's great that you want to jump in both feet first but even the experienced guys on here will tell you they still learn something everyday and with little experience it's easier on you and your first dog if you can start with one that's finished out. But since you already have her just keep working with her, ask for anything that you need help on and try to find an experienced beagler in your area that may be willing to run with you once in a while. Good luck and keep working with her, it can be a tough road but the end result is worth it.

I think i will be ok my brotherinlaw Tbrabbithunter is experienced enough to show me what i need know or a least get me started when he can. Other than that I think that me being new to beagling and the Star being a pup we can learn from each other and make a great team in time to come. I can learn things very quick and retain them as well so far she shows great promise.
