A general forum for the discussion of hunting with beagles, guns, clothing and other equipment and just talking dawgs! (Tall tales on hunting allowed, but remember, first liar doesn't stand a chance)
I have noticed that there are gals that are coming to Competition Beagle Hunts and handling their dogs . I think it is a great thing and a sign of the future. I was recently on a cast that has 2 lady handlers out of 5 . My wife usually attends most of the Beagle Hunts in the area with me although she doesn't handle the dogs. She is as involved with the dogs as I am. It works for us.
Not as long as they post which side of the tree is for the men, and which side is for the women No really, it's good to have the ladies on board, but its most embarassing when you burn the taters, eh Bev ....Patch
I know what you mean and the situations you descibed have occured. I politely anounce that I am going to wet the bushes over there, go behind some bushes and proceed . Most ladies are understanding and politely look the other way. As for the taters, usually the dog dumps are bad enough.
First I would like to say I am a lady (Shannon Beavers)..And I am involved with the Beagles as much or maybe more than my husband Randy..LOL..No really as for the dogs I am feeding them by 8am 7 days a week rain, snow, sleet or shine , ,Now once a month its Interceptor time who passes out the meds ? I do...OK now its time for a trial who makes sure we have everything together? I do !Ok Now we're at the trial we usually take any where between 4 or 5 dogs ,,UH OH there is only Randy and I and our casts draw out at the same time ..You guessed it I handle dogs also!!!!! I also obtained my bench license so I judge the bench sometimes also.I may not do as good of job as Randy handling .... I do it better LOL ..No just kidden but I do enjoy being involved with the dogs and of corse all my NEW Friends I have met! Shannon B ( Wrongside Kennels)
It is a good thing. When I first started going to the trials, many times I might be the only female there. No problem as I grew up in a neighborhood full of boys and no girls, so I'm used to that. It sure is nice to see other ladies get out there and show'em how it's done, though I think it makes for some pretty happy unions, too.
When I started UKC Beagling back in the day..(LOL) I could count the number of women participating on one hand and that was at the big hunts only (state, nationals, pedigrees, etc.) and it's still a small number as far as UKC goes. But the numbers are getting bigger with every year that goes by.
For a long time there, I never saw any women participating. Getting started in UKC as a girl, a young person or someone that doesn't know the rules was pretty tough. Seemed only a few really knew the rules that well (back then). I can tell things have changed and the quality of people and dogs have changed as well.... for the better (I think).
I know that I've seen more women in ARHA/NKC trials then any other registry that I've attended. I wish there were more women trialers in UKC. I've attended a few AKC trials and also have seen only a few, very few women there.
I wish there were more. Don't get me wrong, I like talking dogs with the fellas...But it would sure be nice to talk to women about a sport that I particularly love so much.
Hey everyone and argee with Shannon it is the same thing everyday. Get up feed the dogs get ready for work. Saturday morning comes and I wanna sleep in well skimmer, bennie and patches thinks nope there hungary. getting ready for the hunt josh says do we have everything ?dogs in the truck. Of course we are all ready and he is lolly gagging. We get to the trails OH NO Joshua forgot to grab the dogs paper well luckly I remembered. Then it is finally time to have the fun we go out on our cast and watch our dog do there thing and it feels great. I love it most when the woman in the trail beats all the men . haha and especially meeting all the new people and seeing the old friends. I have met alot of nice people in the last year (bev, lisa and shannon) At first I didn't think I would like it and they both made me feel like i was at home. And now I can't wait to go to the hunts Thanks guys!!!
Forgeting the dogs papers (and other vital things) hits home here. Just about everytime we go to a hunt, there are several things that I forget that Frances Gail remembers . We go to meet new friends like alot of folks do .
My wife, Deb, trialed our 15" male last year from May till August all by herself and finished him in that time, except for a fourth place the year before. Without her to do this he would have been a very good gun dog. She and some others noticed something and took off with it. So, we'd better keep the females invovled if we can. They can show us guys a thing or two sometimes. Should say a lot of times. Deb is super dedicated to the beagles and to our club, where she is secretary.
My wife is taking one of my hounds to the vet Monday. She pushes my 8-month old daughter in her stroller on the strip mines when we run the hounds. We have used a gallon of Skin-So-Soft this summer keeping bugs off my daughter. My son is 4 and can't remember not going to the strip jobs to hunt. Hopefully he will harvest his first rabbit this year when he is 5. He has a youth model 28 gauge that he will pass on to her someday. My wife has a 20 and knows how to use it. She has had to curtail her field trial attendance for obvious reasons this year and didn't get to gun last year for the same obvious reasons. If I didn't have a wife and family that participate, it wouldn't be the same. Some of you macho guys will wake up someday and be old and won't know your families if you don't spend this valuable time with them!!!!!!!!!!!!
My Gal (bride) does not compete with my beagles. They both have a function to do and most times they work well together. They both would like more of my time, but, share well!! HUh?
Hey Tick,
I think we got our wires crossed about the burnt taters. I was cooking in the kitchen that day and literally burnt the "taters". I see where your coming from though.
We do not trial but I wouldn't trade the Misses help and understanding with the hounds for all the tea in china ( and I sure like my tea )...Patch
I just had to bring this back up front. This is so true and DRamey you are so RIGHT about not knowing your family in these times of ours. My wife Donna was real scared about the woman thing also, but we've met the nicest people everywhere we go!!! She'll be handling her own hound once ours are readddy and I'll be so proud of her. We've been married 38 years this September!!!!!!
I Personally Could Not Emagine NOT having My Wife along, to keep things straight LOL She handles the dogs as much as I do And takes care of all the record keeping stuff Who to breed to what lines we have in our Dogs Ect.. We have always hunted together and could not emagine it any other way After over 20 years together We dont even have to talk to know what the other is doing. We Both enjoy listening to the music and being together in the field... The only Problem we run accross is when a Show and trial Are on the same date then we argue about who is doin what Who gets to go to the trial and who gets to walk the ring.... Pretty soon she is gonna make me take my turn at one of the shows so she can trial LOL
My Wife Does all the grooming before the shows all I gotta do is go run Dogs aint it great!!!!!
From Field to Show and Show to Field the way it should be
