dogs history help me

after years of buying dogs that strugel on checks but get the rabbit round once, I have come to see a dog breed for certain traits is the way to go, my question is a person who knows nothing about pedigree's or tracing a dog, is it possible to identify what the dogs or how the dog would run by his paer history for lack of better terms,,,, tips to find a dog like this or just trust the seller, (knowing there honest and dependable)
