Have you tried letting him start the rabbit then have other dogs join him? They tell me that works with pups.

won't pack up

Post by Big Dog »

Kennel him with another dog or two if possible for a couple of weeks and try running him with just those dogs. See how he does then. How old is he? If he is under two and you really like him then I would just say repitition, repetition, repetition. Don't take him out by himself. If he is going to run make sure he has to do it with another dog. TRy to keep it to dogs he is familiar with until he starts going with them. You may not make a trial dog out of him, but you may be able to gun him with your pack by keeping him kenneled with them. It will take a whole lot of patience too. More than I have. Hope this helps.

I have a question: Was this dog soloed a lot when he was young? Or is it that he just never wanted to pack up? I'm trying to see if there was a negative effect of too much solo time.

J Murphy is a pretty reputable beagler so I'm sure he has probably tried a lot of the stuff that I already mentioned, or he didn't feel like putting too much time into this one dog.(which would be the case with me) Dependent upon which of the two cases is true, you may have to make a tough decision after awhile or just hunt him solo .

THANKS BIG DOG, I THINK THIS DOG WAS SOLOED WHEN HE WAS YOUNG ALL THE TIME. EVERYTHING MR.MURPHY SAID ABOUT HIM WAS TRUE & HE TOLD IT ALL. HE GOT RID OF HIM BECAUSE HE FIGHTS IN THE KENNEL & HE TOLD ME THAT, BUT I KENNEL ALL MY DOGS SEPERATE, SO NO PROBLEM THERE. HE DOESN'T FIGHT IN THE FIELD & I THINK HE'S 2 YEARS OLD THIS MONTH. I DON'T TRIAL, BUT HE WOULD ADD A LITTLE CLASS TO MY PACK I REALLY LIKE HIM SO I'LL KEEP TRYING BUT I MAY HAVE TO HUNT HIM SOLO. THANKS AGAIN.

George:
Wow. I am a "pretty reputable" beagler.Thanks Bigdog.LoL!

I got rid of Bear because of his propensity toward fighting. We had given him to friends of ours as a pup.He started on his own because he was allowed to run loose on their land. When they moved they offered him back to us.He hadnt been run in about 6 months(they put up a fence in their back yard)My experiences were the same as George's.He never came out on me but would not bark when down with the other dogs. When down by himself he would burn a rabbit up and give plenty of mouth.I had him out about 4 times total.when he was kenneled at my Dad's he injured one of My Dad's dogs.I brought him to my house to be kenneled with my 60 lb male Shar-pei thinking that he wouldnt try him.My shar-pei whipped him twice in two days, the second time badly. When I took the Bear dog out of the yard he was still whining to get back in to fight more.At this point I decided he had to go.I posted him on here for free and that is how George ended up with him.

George :I am sorry that you are having such a hard time w ith Bear.I figured all he needed was some time on the ground with other dogs.If he doesnt end up coming out of it,let me know and I will come up with something that will better suit you.I would try leaving him for several nights in a running pen.

Cut him and he will probably be alright. I don't mean cut him out of the pack either. Them hangy down things are causing him problems. The way it sounds he ain't gonna need them anyway.

TRY TAKING THE DOG OUT ON LEAD WITH OTHER DOGS, KEEP HIM ON LEAD WHILE THE OTHER DOGS JUMP AND RUN A BUNNY. LET HIM DIG SCRATCH AND WHINE FOR A WHILE BEFORE YOU RELEASE HIM. BEST OF LUCK!!

SEE THERE, MR MURPHY JUST DEALS IN FACTS. BUT NO THANKS MR MURPHY,I'LL KEEP THIS ONE. I KNOWED IT WASN'T GOING TO BE A CAKE WALK WHEN I GOT "BEAR". BUT I'LL KEEP TRYING. HE'S DOING GREAT ON HIS OWN . IF NOTHING ELSE, I'LL JUST USE HIM ON SHORT HUNTS BY HIMSELF OR LISTEN TO HIM GO ON HIS OWN WHILE I WATCH.
& BELIEVE ME, HIS "HANGING DOWN THINGS " WILL BE INTACK. HE HAS LOOKS & ABILITY , & I ENJOY HEARING HIM GO EVEN IF HE HAS TO GO BY HIMSELF. I TOLD MR MURPHY I WOULD GIVE HIM A GOOD HOME & LIKE HIM I JUST DEAL IN FACTS. BESIDES MY WIFE & GRANDKIDS WOULD LYNCH ME IF ANYTHING HAPPENED TO HIM

muzzel

stop him from fighting

Post by muzzel »

muzzel two dogs. this bear u talk of and another dog. put them in a pen together and they with fight. but when they see that they can dog do eny harm to each other they will stop and do other stuff. first. they will fight with the muzzels on for hours. wen they stopwalk in and pet both of themat the same time. wen bear or the other dog growls. always happenens. tell him no. soft talk him. if that doesnt work and he still growls, go to the dog that isnt growling and play with him. take a leach or rope and tie the dog up by the muzel to a tree and play with the other dog. then tie the other dog up by the muzzel to the same place, and play with the first dog. then leave them to fight. if they do not fight stil;l leave them. might work in a day might work in a week. keeep them toghter even wen feeding. just tie them up or feed them in the dog boxes. let then sleep in the dog boxes side by side. or is you have kennels put them facing each other, in a dark room. pitch black. then there noses will kick in and smell each other. do not put them in each others pen though. u say u kennel seprate. do u have a fenced in yard that u can do this in? wen bear and the other dog r fine together take the nuzzels off and watch them. let them fight for a wile, declare domanitce. then muzzel them and another dog. repeat it but there will be 3 dogs out. except when if comes to sleeping time triple dog box. then add a fourth and so on. then go and hunt for a bit. make the dog bark alot when they r together. ok if they get along fine. how many r in ur pack?

I have had success doing as timberdoodle suggested, if the dog loves to hunt and you leash him up while other dogs are running sooner or later he will about go nuts on the leash to get in there. Sounds like he was let loose to run as he saw fit and I believe he is not used to the company and competition of the other hounds. I had a young bitch that refused to pack, the pack could run a hare past her at 30 feet and she would just go on looking for her own, leashed her twice while the pack was running and she about hung herself the second time, she packs very well now. One more bonus is the dog probably is a good jump dog as he is used to hunting alone, getting him to pack will be worth the effort. Hare

I had the same problem once with a dog that wouldn't pack and i solved it very easily. This may not work for you but it worked at both my house and my friends. Since your dog is a fighter you will have to muzzle him to do this but I assure you after they get the fight out of their systems you will have a dog that will pack and cooperate with pack mates. I learned this little trick from my grandfather years ago. Some may think it cruel but it will turn the beagle around.

Every kennel has a boss beagle or pack leader. Put them in the same pen or large fenced area. Muzzle the fighter or better yet muzzle them both so neither will get hurt. attach a 2 dog coupler to the dogs and remove anything that they may get tangled in. A couple time a day snap them up and take them for a walk toghther but do not unhook them. The beagle that won't pack will soon learn to stay with the leader and will cooperate. When you are staisified with his progress take them loose and out for a run. If the dogs will not pack repeat the process.

The beagles i used this on had almost been gievn up on. This was a last resort but it worked and today this little female is one of the best that i own. If you like the dog it is worth thr try and is far less cruel that the fate it would have if you tire of it and it gets in the hands of the wrong people.

WON'T PACK

I LIKE THE IDEA OF PUTTING A COUPLER ON THE DOGS. I BELIEVE I CAN DO THIS WITHOUT THE MUZZLE. HE WON'T FIGHT IN THE FIRLD,SO IF HE'S RUNNING LOOSE I SHOULDN'T HAVE TO WORRY.
I ALSO LIKE THE IDEA OF LEAVING HIM IN THE KENNEL SO HE CAN HEAR THE OTHER DOGS RUNNING. THIS DRIVES HIM NUTS. HE HAS
JIGGS MAGGIES MATE, CLOSE CALL GIRL, INDIAN HILL LEESA & MCCRESSES DUCK IN BACK GROUNG. I KNOW ABILITY IS IN THERE I JUST HAVE TO BRING IT OUT. THANKS FOR YOUR HELP.
