I have a young bitch that had her first heat when she was about 11-12 months old. She got out and tied with a littermate male so a buddy breeding for years told me to palpate her abdomen roughly, that would get rid of any puppies. So I did that for a few days and she now has not been in heat since, 8 months later. I tried changing the feed from Sportmix to Purina One in case that was the problem. Nothing.
I talked to my Vets office about this and they said she could have thyroid problems I haven't taken her in to the vet yet, thought I'd get other opinions first. This is one of my best bitches and one that I was hoping to get a litter out of next year. Has anyone heard of thyroid problems in beagles or have their hounds just not come in season on time? I'm also worried I might have ruined her by palpating her abdomen. Banging my head against the wall for that one.

Only 8 months? thats nothing! I wouldn't worry just yet. Its not unusual to have a bitch go 8 months or up to a year between heats. If you can get her near another bitch in season it may help but, I wouldn't go running a bunch of tests until she has gone over 12 months without one.

They NEVER EVER come in season when you want them to.. Only when its completely inconvenient ;-) Girls!!!

I had one that took a year and a half. Most of mine are 9+ months apart.
I don't like the part you mentioned about palpating her abdomen roughly though...I just don't see what that could do but POTENTIALLY cause her organ damage, or miscarriages of older fetuses.

Yeah, thats what I'm mainly worried about Really stupid thing to do in hindsight.
I have a bitch coming into her first heat right now and have been penning this one with her at night. Still nothing. But I'm relieved to hear that they can go more than 6 months between cycles and still be normal! So thanks a lot for the advice; it has eased my mind some!

Most of my red and white females only come into heat once a year so I wouldn't worry about the tme span in between cycles.

Just kidding on the other post, that doesn't always work anyway........... If you are kenneling her with another female that is in heat that is the best thing to bring one in. I would leave them together all the time though unless they fight over food. Even in this case you could seperate them while eating.This does not always work but its the best thing you can do to trigger a cycle.

Both of my Patch females go way over the 6 month mark. Misty should have come in around June and never came in until Sept. Lacie should have come in August, havent seen hide nor hair of it.

We have one female that comes in once a year only and it looks like her pups are following suit with this. Fortunately she comes in season late spring so at least during the best running she is not down and out...

Thanks everyone for helping ease my mind about this! I'd heard some bitches only came in season once a year, but before now never heard of any Beagles that did this. So that's a relief. The Vet was all set to have me come in for $$$$$$$ thyroid testing.

pour some mineral oil down her. Sound stupid but when want a horse to come in just pour it down them in 3 days their in. have never tried this on a dog but won't hurt her just clean out good.

We have two beagles that only come into heat every 12 months.

That is allot better than the wifes Shih Tzu that is in heat every three months.
