Genetics?
I have read several different thoughts on this and was wondering what this forum's thoughts were on the subject. If your thoughts are from other than listed then please explain.
my thoughts...
Each parent provide their own set of genes and how they combine is random.... so for me, if its random, over time the numbers would have to say 50/50....

I am really up in the air on this kinda see for many years I thought that a dam held 70% of what you could expect from a puppy but recently I have seen 2 litters born and am kind of confused on the results see Litter one is a cross of a lightning fast male that is very impressive on the track but not much on jumping his own rabbits from a line of pure speed dogs and a dam of super hard hunting dogs with medium speed great on the check and jump we made this cross in hopes to produce more foot from they're sire and the hunt of they're dam they produced a litter of five pups 3 females and 2 males out of the pups I have one super hard hunting male with medium to upper medium speed one female with absolutly no hunt and is slow when she is on a track and 1 male and 2 females that have all the speed of the father if not more and the hunt of they're mother all of these pups were all trained alike with all of the same amount of time in running same amount of time solo and with mild old pup trainer everything the same just all different so in this case I say it changes by pups everyone is different and has a different personality.
In litter two I crossed a upper medium speed male that runs super tight lines and has a really strong nose can run all day on anything with a female of similar abilitys but runs a much wider check area these dogs are line bred grand uncle to a grand neice they produced 7 pups 2 males and 5 females out of all of these pups only 1 female at 9 months old shows all the abilitys of her sire and one is much faster than the others but also runs fairly ratical when a track breaks down the other 5 pups are almost exact duplicates of they're dam same style same markings they are like clones almost.
Dunno just a few observations I have made from the last 2 litter out of our kennel the only thing I can say is if you line breed you see alot of the same charistics and wen you go outside your kennel be prepared to get equal results either good or bad you have a good chance at close to 50/50 hope this can help out some sorry for such a long rambling

Thanks. I've always thought it came with almost every species including humans. I know this much I have a lot of my grandma stubborness in me and my Grandpa's smart$%@ attitude. loldanny vansickle wrote:good post,i think the grandparents influence them most, but one side can inluece more than the other and it is different in each pup,one pup may favor the sires dide and the next can be opposite

I didnt vote because my answer isnt on the list. I too believe it can vary from pup to pup in the same litter (or human to human, horse to horse, etc). Our dogs are all linebred Patch hounds, with similar breeding even though they are from different kennels. Their traits and running styles are all very similar. I however am considering an outcross just once. I am after something specific so that is what I am looking for in a stud. I know it is a gamble that may not work, at least in the first generation. After that any pup I keep will be bred back to Patch. But I do have a goal, a breeding plan, I am not just randomly throwing dogs together.

I personally think the Dam puts more traits into the pups, but with that being said. I try to buy pups in pairs from the same litter. By doing this you increase your odds of getting what you are looking for.

I HAVE LINE BRED DOGS FOR A LONG TIME AND I BELIEVE THAT WHILE BREEDING THIS WAY THE SIRE AND DAM WILL THROW MORE OF THEIR SIRE AND DAMS TRAITS THAN THEIR OWN I HAVE SOME CLOSE BRED BRANKO AND SHAKER BRED DOGS HERE WHERE I HAVE SOME OF THE GREAT ONES ON TOP AND BOTTOM WE WILL SEE IF THAT THEORY IS TRUE HERE SHORTLY ,WHEN I OUTCROSS I TRY TO BREED TO GET WHAT MY LINE MIGHT BE LACKING ,HUNT ,DESIRE ,SPEED .......... THEN I WILL CROSS THIS RIGHT BACK TO MY EXISTING LINE .MY PARTNER AND DID THIS FOR A LOT OF YEARS WITH UKC REG HOUNDS AND WE HAD 5 TO 6 GENERATIONS OF HBCH TOP AND BOTTOM NOW IM STARTING OVER WITH MY OWN STUFF SO IT IS GOING TO BE FUN !!!! THEY CALL ME FASTEDDY
