A H.S. friend told me of a place with a bunch of rabbits(cottontails). He and a friend went and in 5 trips they killed 148 cottontails. Have any of you got those numbers of rabbits?? We're going over with him this fall.

Looks like a lot of rabbits for 2 people to take as the limit in Missouri is 6 per day per person ,148 in 5 day thats almost 15 per day per hunter ! I guess a large number of rabbits killed doesnt impress me as I get older what impresses me is how many did you run for an hour or two. I dont want to affend you with this post but around here we have men that only hunt during season and brag on how many rabbits they kill their dogs will not even circle a rabbit. They just jump shoot them them after they kill a bunch they try for hours to give them away.Hunting ground and game has decreased each year we need to protect what we have left.
sportsman- NOT!!

Yes, that is bad and people just seem to think good ole prarie plankton, ole briar rabbit is an unexhaustable suppply and vermin, not a sporting animal. Sad, but they will bend over backwards to kiss a deer's and turkey's #ss !!!!!!

No offense taken guys. Did i mention they took their boys?? Now do the math. Farmers welcome all to get rid of the rabbits and as we all can imagine how much crop damage can be done when they are that thick. Wouldn't be ideal for a dog i don't think as it would be difficult to run just one track. We could unite and capture them and send them to the poor folks over in Austrailia........i guess they have their own rabbit problems. They make good sausage. Next!!

What did Peters say the other day Danny? I think it was somethin like Thats just one less i wont be able to run. Theres a fellow up this way that he and his boy kill about 350 a year for the last couple years. That just drives me crazy. What the heck anyone these days need with that many rabbits.

There is a wma close to me that consist of around 1200 acres of rabbit heaven. I was told that there was over 1000 rabbits killed there the first week. I hunted it the last day of season and there were still 100's of them all over the place. I think ALabama John and his friends had a few good days there and I always killed as many as I wanted over there.

Alswamper, did they tell you about the time we emptied our coats at noon and hauled the rabbits back to the truck? My son the carrying mule, laid them on top of my dog box and someone came by and got them all. Probably was the best day rabbit hunting they ever had. I would like to of heard their stories about how they got them. We think it was another hunter as a truck with a dog box did stop and listen for a while where our truck was parked, but, that in itself is not unusual.
Hope it was not another hunter but, if so, they probably did not have very good dogs.
Hopefully it was just someone hungry for rabbit.
I say again, seeing the results of what they are hunting and your happiness with those results sure helps your dogs in many ways, not the least is staying straight.
One time we would have gotten more, but Ted Peercy's 20 guage couldn't hit them!!!lol
Putting out hooks or some method to reduce the preditors sure helps the population.

Watch it, AlSwamper. You're treadin' on thin ice, lol!
I heard something disturbing a few years back and I hope there's not a grain of truth to it. Some guys that go into honey-holes and strip mines bringing out "hundreds" of rabbits turn around and sell them to people for $5 ea.
Beagle Bill, 350 rabbits - we can all do the math on that one, huh? Somebody in that family must eat one rabbit a day, every day of the year, short 14 days. Even if he gave half away, nobody's gonna tell me two people ate rabbit every other day for a year. I like rabbit, but 7-10 rabbit dinners in a winter is good for me.

We never shoot on the jump.
There are a lot of old, old, oldtime rabbit hunters that sure appreciate your coming by, sitting a spell, remembering, and reminicing about old hunting trips with them. Especially talk about well remembered named past dogs and their antics and traits. They like for you to tell them about your dogs and know every one of them by name and what their mouth sounds like as best as you can imitate it on a porch or sadly, in a bedroom beside a bed. They sure like a rabbit to eat.
In the case of the widows, there are a lot more of them and they like to hear the same old stories or tall tales you have told them many times over the years about their husbands that have gone on. All this while you skin them out one or a few to eat and put in the freezer.
I think they look forward to it each year. I know I do!

I COULDN'T HIT 'EM !!!!!!! If I remember correctly, that is where you picked up the nickname "CROOKED BARRELS GRANT". The second day, John even brought a different gun. Didn't help him any though. LOL
As far as Swamper goes, he wouldn't know the truth if it ran up and bit him in the crotch. Bowhunter told me he ran with him once and there were two races on every rabbit. Bowhunter's dogs chased the rabbit and AlSwamper's dogs chased Bowhunter's dogs. Being from Waynesboro, TN originally, he probably wears those funny looking orange sweatshirts around Birmingham. ROLL TIDE !!!!
