Very Worried Beagle Puppy Owner

My puppy woke up blind in one eye them morning.

She woke up yesterday fine ( I think) well I was preparing breakfast for the beagles my youngest noticed her eye wasn't open all the way. I looked and noticed it wasn't..I had thought maybe Ty ( my other beagle) had gotten to ruff with her. So I cleaned it and kept a eye on it..No sepage was comeing out of it. Till later..I cleaned that out and her eye seemed to open more..So I had figured she got something in it and it was out..

Well I came home the morning to her eye all clouded over..I know she can't see out of it cause she leans and turns her head. I don't have $100 + dollars to take her to an emergancy vet. $85 just for the vet to come not including the visit and all she will need. And they a pricey vet to begin with. Not my vet who has worked with me alot.

What do I do.. I am so upset. And stressed. She was suppose to be my future puppies mother..How can I breed her now. UGH!!! Sorry I am just in  now.

Any advice will be helpful. She will be in the vet ASAP Tuesday no worries there.

We have had luck with terramycin (sp?) clearing up eyes that seemed similar to what you are describing. I am not sure if there is anywhere you can get it though. Sometimes feed stores carry it. It would be worth a try though. I think it is about 9.50 for a small tube which is a lot better than a pricey vet.

I know Pet Supplies Plus usually carries it, and so does PBS Animal Health. I always try to keep a tube on hand. Hope everything works out ok.

TSC carries eye antibiotics. I don't remember if it is what was posted above or not...

Good luck with your pup.

eyes can be an amazingly healing thing. But keep this in mind. I have known alot of one eyed dogs (lost due to injuries) that continue on with full lives, hunting, breeding etc. Dont give up hope. While you are picking up eye ointments, also pick up a saline solution to simply wash the eye with a few times a day, wash it out a few minutes before you put the ointments in. helps clean out anything the oils in the oinments have picked up.

Good luck.

Sounds like a corneal scratch.. It looks terrible but, isn't. Its basically turned into an ulcer. Do NOT use any ointment with a steroid in it as this slows healing. Terramycin is good as someone pointed out but, if your in a bind use regular triple antibiotic ointment (neosporin) DO NOT get the kind with pain relievers in it (lidocane) Just the plain kind. It takes a couple of weeks for those ulcers to heal.

I went and got onitment..and cleaned it out with a hot rag..and she whined..I don't know if its from the junk on her eye or from whats wrongs with it.

Do these ulcers cause pain? I hope this clears up..But I will get her to a vet. If there is no improvement by tuesday.

And THANK YOU all for being here.

Yes, any injury of the eye is quite painful. You know what its like just to get a hair in your eye. In her case she has a painful ulcer. They do take time to heal and they do get better. A vet visit isn't a bad idea but, its not an emergency today. Keep her quiet if you can and away from other dogs.

best of luck,

Leah

That is funny..She gets so mad when I seperate her and Ty..But I have a feeling if its a scratch its from their ruff playing and it won't be happening again.

The green goopies are gone but still cloudy when does that go away?

OOO and she is a brat when comes to cleaning it out.

Cut your puppy nails short!!! The cloudiness takes a while to go away. You need to apply the ointment daily though until that cloudiness is gone.

Terramycin is a awesome solution to most eye related problems. Its like ex-lax give it time and it WILL work. When you clean the eye use a hot moist rag and it is not as painful on the pup,A little peanut butter on the tongue usally keeps the pup occupied long enough to clean and treat the eye.
