Blueticks

I owned bluetick beagles more than 32 years ago. It's just a color. Other breeds have similar colors. I agree with Fuzz.

The original beagles brought into the USA were not blueticked so how did they become blueticked? This should be researchable. GOOGLE IT.

I actually researched this. I had a lot of old paintings saved on my computer from the 1800's showing English pack beagles with........you guessed it, TICKING. Too bad that computer crashed and I was unable to save those pictures BUT you can get similar ones by contacting the kennel club in the UK.

Almost all beagles have this ticking gene. If you see two freckles on the legs of a hound, it has the ticking genes. The midifier genes determine how intense the ticking will be. Those of you with blueticks also know that if you breed a bluetick to a tri-color with little or no ticking, all of the pups will have some degree of ticking, but usually not as intense as the parent.

In short, a coon dog aint got a dang thing to do with the color.

I have some old pics from my Granddad, they were taken in the early 1900's. He had a couple of bluetick hounds. No coonhound in them. they weren't but a couple of generations off the boat.

Southern Beagles pretty much said all that I was going to say. Some of the first beagles Hiram Card had here in North America was heavy on ticking. The more and more they and like colored beagles were crossed the heavier the blackish/blue ticking become predominant.

Oh in case some of you are wondering... red/white beagles aren't from beagles and redbone coonhound crosses either! :haha:
