Sick dog....

I have a dog that is a mess, he acts like his gut is hurting him. He cant hardly walk or lay down, back legs act strange, like they are not real strong. When I press his stomach, back near his unit, he whines like it hurts him. He is eating a little. I cant find a vet to get him to today.

Anyone have any idea what you can give a dog to make em poop? I think maybe he has some kind of blockage but am not sure. I can tell he is in pain. ANy help appreciated......I hate seeing anything in pain.

i am sure you can get doggy laxatives,my aunts pomeranian had to take something for constipation,it was also on vallum

I just had to put one of mine down. He had the exact same symptoms as you're dog. Took him to the vet he diagnosed him with aspirated ammonia and coccidia in about two day's he was gone. Hope I'm wrong but sounds identical.

Is he bloated or straining? what makes you think he needs to go, no stool in pen for a few days?
On pups, I've used mineral oil to both ends. Syringe it down their throat, then, kyjelly another, and put it to the rear. No solid food, only chicken broth or stock.
Take temp., check gums for colour and bad breath.
If I couldn't get a vet today, I'd give 2cc pen-g(temp. / infection) and 3cc valbazen(for gut protozoa).
Need to watch for stool, this tells you alot of what's going on.

I have never seen anything like this, 18 hours ago this dog was as normal as could be and as I type this I think he is dieing. He cant walk now, acts like his balance is messed up. He is walking like a drunk, dragging legs!

I am waiting for an emergency vet to call me back. He just called as I was typing....said he thinks the dog has some type of back compression..IBC or something like that? Said for me to bring him in at 5 and he would give him steroids, inflamatory and something else. He told me if I wait the dog will become worse and need surgery or die.

I have heard of a lot of people losing dogs from back problems.

I just hate it for this dog.......dont know what to do for him though.

It sounds very much like this dog has slipped or ruptured a disc in the spine. They will have generalized pain all over their body when this happens, not just in the spinal area. I've had a few with this and one had a disc ruptured, she had to be euthanized. This is a veterinary emergency & this dog needs to be seen by the vet NOW.

Yes, this is a problem with Beagles, its called Intervertebral Disc Disease ... and contrary to what some may say, it is genetic I just had to put down my 3yr old Thorn Gap bred bitch because she slipped her disc, which, even after Veterinary care, then ruptured It seems to be very prevelant in some true medium speed bloodlines with the shorter bodies/longer backs. But not always ...

Beagled1, You nailed it. Thats what is wrong with him. He spent the day at the vet and I went back this evening to see if he was doing any better. He really isnt. They gave him a cortizone shot......and I was prepared to put him down, but the vet says I should give him a couple of days. He gave me some pills and sent the dog home with us. Told me to hope. He said recoverey of leg use some times happens with medication and a few days rest.

I am just so confused. I hate to see him in any pain...but I hate to put him down if his back may heal. I dont really understand how this happened in the kennel, but the vet said many times it happens by a dog jumping off a couch.

At this point my dog still dont have use of his hind legs, his neck appears to be less sore.....because he now moves it to look around, where before he was tensed up with neck stiff and nose up. He is eating again.

Beagled1...honestly......have you ever seen a dog recover from this with just meds and be ok? The vet tried telling me the rate of dogs that recover without surgery is 70%+, that sounded hard to believe. I have never heard of one making it and being normal. What you think?

There was a post on one of these forums a while back about a dog with the same thing. He couldn't walk and dragged his back legs.. might have been under beagle health. That dog eventually came back around and is walking and he is taking previcox. It took a good few weeks though.. Give him some time.

I had a 4 year old male recover 100 %. He could not stand on his own when I took him to the vet. They said he needed expensive surgery or to be put down. I actually went to the vet and signed the papers, but I requested to see my buddy. They had been giving him a pain reliever and steroids for two days. When they let him in he walked over to me and jumped in my lap. Needless to say I tore up some papers and rode home with Lou in the front seat. We continued the steroids and anti inflamatories for two weeks. That was two years ago and he is still doing fine. Lou is the family pet, he had failed as a rabbit hunter so my wife and daughter were overjoyed . He runs around the yard, chases the cat, rides in the front of the truck and howls when I take the other dogs hunting or running.

Anthony, that's great! It cheers me up to know so many others have had this happen and the dog recover. I dont want to get too optimistic.....but he seems to have improved a little today. He is sleeping tonight instead of sitting up all tense like he did last night. I hope I see more improvement tomorrow.
