right now i got 7 including a pup i hardly ever run or hunt by myself and usualyy run with 12-20 hounds alot during hunting season usually we got around 8-12 out i got 4 young dogs including the pup i am planning on sending at least 1 down the road .. what does everybody try to keep??
i got 1 male for a stud dog hes a gooden.
another male is very close blood to him so i got him in case something happens to the other ol but he happens to be a good dog too.
my best female for breeding of course and she is a gooden also
a yr old pup out of different breeding to give me some diff blood but all is still patch
another female about 2 yrs old that was bred here but sold as a pup just seeing how she is right now.
a male pup that i outcrossed to dfj/patch to just see what would it make
last but not least a female pup out of my best male and female....now i dont plan on keeping all of that but i figure u gotta raise something to boot the older ones out ,,plus culling of the youing ones,,i would really like not to have more than 5 or 6 at most but man it s hard to do that!

I have 5 running dogs currently. I will hopefully have another pup this fall. I can run small groups or solo and get them all plenty of off season running. I think I will limit myself to one pup at a time from now on. I can house 8 dogs comfortably. I hunt with 2 different groups and usually hunt my dogs with somebody elses dogs during the season. If I had more time I would probably have a few more, but it looks like I will have to work for at least 100 more years. Dang lottery just won't cooperate.

I need four but I have 17 counting the six pup litter have been raising. I let one female go Sunday that I would have kept under normal circumstances. I may let a couple of the pups go but I will wait until they are started to make my decision. I not plan to raise a litter until I am back under a dozen. I may still buy a pup here and there but it would have to be a breeding that I thought had LOTS of potential!

That's an easy question. Just 1 more and I'll have enough.

Dana Robinson (Shady Grove) and I were just talking about this the last time we ran together a couple weeks ago. Both of us agreed that fewer dogs is just plain easier to deal with and you can easily get the job done rabbit hunting w/ 2 - 3 good dogs.
Like you all, I often end up hunting with others and only take 2 or 3 dogs with me. I usually keep 5 or 6 dogs and usually 1 or 2 of them are pups. When I run dogs to condition them, I typically run 2 at a time. Occasionally, I will solo them, and occasionally I will run them all at the same time. I just don't know how folks do it that keep 30+ dogs.
I honest just do not have the time to keep more dogs, train them and keep them in good running shape. I rather take the time I have for running dogs and split it amoung 5 - 6 dogs than 10 - 15 dogs. For me, I will have better dogs, by limiting the number I keep.

I've got a 4 year old, a 2 year old and a 9month old. In theory when the oldest is to old to hunt hard all the time the middle should be in her prime, the pup should be a hard hitting young dog and I'd be ready for a new pup then.

I had 14 last month but sold two. I've got 12 now not counting pups, and am going to sell a few more before the season. I like to have 4-5 dogs in my A pack and 4-5 in my B pack at all times, w/ a few upcoming pups. I'll have 4 upcoming pups that I'm keeping soon. It's just enough to have plenty of dogs, but not too many that they sit around and can't be run. My ideal # is 10 running hounds w/ some pups on the way.
