Is there any good places to hunt in NY. Maybe a guided hunt with an outfitter.

I was thinking about the Adirondack Mountains but I wasn't sure how it would be up there. Does anyone know??

I was also thinking about Maine.

I've run my hounds as far south as Hopewell Junction, where I have access to private property. Last year was so-so, but this year already, I'm seeing hares coming out of the woodwork! Was in Yonkers a few weeks ago, which is semi urban, and bunnies were overruning the property  Probably not supposed to :shhh: but I have taken the hounds out to Van Cortdlant Park here in the Bronx, and we consistantly find hare - so I'm betting most areas in NY should be good running grounds!

I seriously doubt that there is hare in yonkers!

You do know there is a difference between a hare and a rabbit?

i would not think there is any habitat near yonkers for hare. i live in the catskill mt.s we have a few and this year the cottentails poup. has exploded. i would have to think you are seeing cottentails.

Yes I agree that there are no hare in hopewell. I live close to there. 54 you will do well in the adirondacks on most any of the state lands. Call the Dec & they will send you free maps in whatever county you ask for. Mike

Northern NH and maine is loaded with hare you could come to either state and if you know much about what hare cover looks like you wont have any problem at all finding some covers to run in. paper company land is what you really want to look for thick grown up clear cuts hope this helps.

Have you ever been down to Hopewell? I go there every year and there are hare, not just rabbit - hare. Yes, I've seen cottontails there, but we do have hare in southern NY. Was in Yonkers at the beginning of June and there were hare on the property. Yonkers is not far from Yorktown Heights ... I haven't been there in a while but I *think* the Southern NY Beagle Club is still in Yorktown. There ARE most certainly hare AND rabbit in Yorktown & the counties that border it!

Heck, I am in the Bronx, which is the northernmost NYC borough and we do have public, wooded parks here. You WILL see rabbit, hare, and other small game on occasion. This year & last we had coyotes in Van Cortdland park which is on the Yonkers border. We have COONS here too. In the residential areas. For the past 3 years, every spring/summer we hear coons and will occasionally see one. We may not have a vast abundance of wildlife here, and places like Yonkers certainly aren't hunting grounds, lol, but yes, we DO most certainly have a decent hare population here.

My point to the OP was that he wouldn't exactly be hard pressed to find good running grounds if he decided to hunt in NY - since we have such a healthy population of rabbit & HARE in such semi urban counties here - I even once sold a pup to a family who hunt their hound (on hare)EXCLUSIVELY in a wooded park by their home, in Queens :gunguy:
