we have a beagle running around our place that someone dumped off you cant get within 100 yards of her but she will come up in our yard and eat food my son has left out for her .We have tried coaxing her with no luck put out a live trap and she has sprung it once ....any sugestios would be appreciated

357.......thats probably why it at ur place the owner couldnt catch it.!i have no time with shy dogs at all.but i9f u really want it get the dog catcher to come dart it with a tranquilzer then go pick it up!

I would not jump to any conclusions about the dog being shy! I had a year and a half old female. She got off on a deer in BIG woods on a WMA. I looked for her dozens of times and had several reported sightings of a dog fitting her description within a mile or two of where she was lost. Everytime I got a call I would go ASAP (30 minute drive) to the spot where she had been spotted and call - NOTHING! I left food, articles of clothing, and ran her packmates all around the area hoping she would join in. Hundreds of deer carcasses are dumped on that WMA each season and the coyotes are thick as fleas on a dogs back. Apparently, my beagle was eating the same carcasses and likley running from yotes at night. On the 38th day of her disappearance, I got a call from a guy near the WMA who said he had my beagle! She had been hanging around his place (once deer season was over and the carcasses ran out?) just as you describe - eating their scraps but shying away from his family members whenever they tried to approach her. In regards to how to catch her, the guy sat in his living room with a string attached to the door of a dog carrier with food inside. He said it took him all day to trap her! When I got over to his place she was in their living room eating treats and being petted by his entire family - gentle as could be! Beagle are a bit cautious of strange cirumstances to begin with and if the one hanging out at your place has gone a bit "wild" from being alone, it may not be shy - just confused and afraid!

shooting at this point is not an option she's not cuaseing any problems she hangs out in the cornfields in the daytime and we see here sneaking around the yard at night .we set a live trap Coon size and I saw her crawl in and take the food last night but it must be to small the door hit her in the back and she was able to back out .I think she is very scared . she will sit out in the field and just watch us.

I caught one once by feeding it a couple times a day for 3 days ,each time moving the dish closer to the house, finally put the dish in the garage and used auto door opener to trap it in the garage. Sent it to the pound, could have used the 22 on it but to tell you the truth it was kind of fun to see if I could catch it. Hare

If you have a big wire cage with a door on it you can set it out with food in it and tie a rope or long wire to the door and run it through the top of the cage... put some food in it and the dog goes in you pull the wire to shut the door and you have the dog... Make sure you hold the wire tight if the door doesn't latch on it's own... 40 or 50 feet away should do the trick..

I not only get rid of stray dogs running loose ,Icull dogs that do not make the grade. It is called being a responsible sporstsman.

There is no such thing as a cull if you know how to train a dog!!

Sometimes a girl can catch a shy dog better than a man. Man shy can be just that. I know I warm up to strange girls quick.

With thinking like that ,I can see why so many poor quality dogs are born.Working dogs are not lap dogs . Passing on poor genetics harms the breed. Good luck to you .If you are satisfied with your dogs that is all that counts.

I think you mean, YOU have to earn the hounds trust, but your right...
The hound is domesticated, his behaviour is such that he needs someone. Food, shelter and kindness are the ways to his heart, use these and you'll have him eatting from your hand...
I tell the children, don't chase the puppies, let them chase you. They sense the predator in us and it scares them.

I caught a hound for some fellows that had lost her hunting. I put Casey on a chain and hooked him at the gate post of his pen and left the gate open. The chain was long enough that he could still go in his dogbox at night. I put his food in the bowl at just before dark and went in the house and watched. The female came out of the woods and shared his feed with him and later when he went in the box to sleep, she went in with him. I slipped out after a while and closed the gate and gave the fellows a call to come get their hound in the morning. She wanted to be with her own kind but wouldn't trust me to catch her...
