1. which dog comes back when called. 2. which dog starts barking while still on the tailgate.
3. which dog pukes in the dog box.
4. which dog takes a dump and gets it all over them in the dog box.
5. which dog you have to tackle to catch.
6. which dog you might get lucky and catch on a day that it wants to run a rabbit.
7. which dog that cant bark on track because its too scared of loud noises.
8. which dog that is relliably asleep under the truck while you are hunting.
9. which dog jumps a rabbit and runs it 100 yards and decides thats enough.
number 10 of my all time favorite things about beagles is, buying a dog that the guy says " this is the best dog I ever had".

Sorry Preacher I couldnt help but be a smart a$$. :D

I'm a little picky myself.
1. Hunt
2.line control
3.check work
4.foot speed
5.handling
6.conformation/looks
Reasons for culling and by culling I don't mean passing off to other unexpecting beaglers.
1. Gun shy
2.foot warmers(hang at your feet instead of busting brush)
3.Die hard Trash Runners
4.Cold Trailers/babblers that never produce the rabbit
5.Me too dogs(other dogs have to produce the rabbit for them)

I agree with Bunny jumper... but I like a dog that uses it's mouth right also. Hate a dog barkin' idiot!

headed in the right direction after a few unexpected deaths. handling, no swinging, good honest mouth, hunt, push too the limit.

if i can get the first two characteristics above. i will make it a rabbit dog, run, run, run and i love to see a dog develop into a hound. :D

I agree w/ bunny jumper. Mostly the same reasons in mostly the same order. Hunt, line control, & speed all need to conform to what I want for that dog to stay here. Check work, handling, & a true mouth, are also important, conformation & looks too

I HAD RATHER RATE HILLY'S KENNEL.BECAUSE IT'S AN EASY -F-

BUT I LOOK FOR A HOUND WITH A LOT OF HUNT,NO RESPECT FOR IT'S BODY AS TO BRIARS,THORNS AND SUCH AND NOT JUST IN THE MORNING IT MUST BE ABLE TO GO ALL DAY.AND I SHOULD NOT HAVE TO DRAG IT OUT OF THE BOX NEXT DAY.GOOD MOUTH USED RIGHT, GOOD,, NOSE,, GOOD FOOT,, WITH CONTROL CONFORMATION DON'T HAVE TO BE SHOW QUALITY BUT GOOD.NO TRASH NO NIGHT BARKING OR BARKING IN THE BOX,FIGHTING ETC BACK TRACKING- NO COLD- TRAILING. BUT THE MAIN THING IS I CAN NOT TOLERATE A DOG THAT HUNTS HARD AWHILE AND COMES OUT QUITS,THAT MARKS THE END FOR IT,NOW CAN A DOG DO ALL THIS AND REPRODUCE MOST CANNOT.I DIDN'T SAY MUCH ABOUT JUMPING RABBITS -MOST OF THESE HOUNDS ARE -NATURAL JUMP DOGS AND A JUMP DOG IS USUALLY A GOOD- CHECK- DOG

Another thing I consider is how the dog fits into my breeding program/genetics. I favor females for the flexibility on breeding them. Males require extreme tallent to stay.

3 things they must have brains, hunt and grit, some will jump more rabbits, some will do better check work, some will run the track better but they all must have those 3 items.

I see you are from Rocky Mount NC. I run very close to there. We'll have to turn a few out sometime.

Steve Boardman , see you at the Tazewell Va. hunt this weekend.
