2 of my pups born yesterday are grey. I have never had any like that so I am wondering how common they are.

thos should look a like a blueish gray. i call them blue. i cant explain why. just know what they look like at a adult.

Its double recessive so, both parents must carry the gene. They are called blue (dilute) No serious health issues just a interesting color ;-) I've only had 1 born here.

I think that gray pup is striking. what would the genetic marker be on that??

well I do know how hard it is to get away from the dang dawgs sometimes. Last time I went to the nail salon Lo Hung was mortified by the site of my 9 raggedy nails...yes 9. I was almost down to 8!!!!
Unfortunately, after a few years "in dogs" I know all too personally why dog people look the way they do.

I have heard this called dilute as well, on this board I think. I have also heard it called "mouse-colored." I've seen hounds this color as pups and as grown hounds and it is much less noticeable in grown hounds, at least the ones I've seen. They look a lot less "washed out" for lack of a better description as they mature. Again, the ones I have seen, but there may be others that retain the dilute coloring. IMO, I really like it. It looks somewhat tough and no-nonsense to me.

found it:
Locus A- at: Produces tan "points" such as the typical tricolor, black and tan or liver and tan. All beagles are homozygous (pure, with both alleles being the same) for this condition regardless of their color, even lemon and white.

Locus D- d: Dilutes black to so-called "Maltese" blue (actually a gray), and brown to silvery, as in the Weimaraner. The dog must be dd (homozygous, recessive) to be "blue" with both parents contributing the d gene for the color to appear.

I have a lpgrch clarks rebel that is this blue color. He will through pups this color alot.

Doc S, a few years ago, wrote about the grey/blue coloring in pups & if I remember correctly said that many times they later can develop skin problems. It was coincidental that at the time I was about to buy one; I decided not to & later found out that it had developed health problems. Don't know if it was related, but it would be interesting to find that Doc S article again, since there seems to be a lot of these colored pups being mentioned on the boards lately.

Most will end up with no hair.
