This is the first year in over 20 years that I own beagles. So my knowledge of beagles is very limited. What's the best thing I could put on the dogs when I run them in warm weather to help keep ticks off them? I appreciate any info. Thanks Phil

Phil, I keep Sevin dust in their bedding. If they get ticks on them while in the field, they won't stay on them when you bring them home. Others use other things that they apply monthly, but this is very simple and inexpensive and works great. I always sprinkle it from a measuring cup, but I saw a post once that a beagler used a Mason jar with holes poked in the lid for a sprinkler for the Sevin dust.

I treat my dogs with Revolution, which comes in a oil which you apply once per month between thier shoulder blades against the skin. If you would happen to need anything additional, try the Permithern spray which you spray prior to a run in the field. You probably will never see a tick again. This also comes in a spray for people, in a formula from Repel, but only spray it on your clothing. I wear it turkey hunting in the spring, and never see one when I have it, but will get eaten alive without it. With all the Lyme desease around, you have to be proactive or you could get very sick!

Whats the stuff for people called that is made my Repel and where can you buy it? If it works as good as you say I want to try it! I have not found much of anything that keeps them off of me. Looks like its going to be another bad year for them ticks. Its not even April and im tired of them already!

I would like to know too. I ran tonight and was ate up with them so was my dogs. Also is there anything you can use on a bitch still feeding pups?
With all the ice this winter I never would have expected this.

Repel... permanone; spray it on your clothing, do not apply to skin, works great. You can get it at Wal-mart.

Smitty is right on the $ w/ Repel. It's pretty cheap at wally world and is in the Off section, near the camping stuff. I use Sevin 10% in my kennels and on the dogs monthly in addition to Frontline.

I use Advantix on our beagles, and Frontline Plus on the Labs. The Frontline seems to be a little more water resisitent. We have a bad time with ticks on the beagles even in Nov and Dec if I dont use anything. The Advantix just gets the job done. Now if only I could use it on their trainer.......

I agree with Dramey, Sevin dust in their bedding and a light dusting on their coat every once in awhile has worked really well for us. Haven't had fleas since we started using it and no tick problems now either.

Sevin dust, is that something you would want in your house?

Seven 5% or something like it is probably used in you house if you have an exterminator come out. They might use it around windows or door cracks but I personaly would not have a dog that was dusted running through my house. I use it on all my outside dogs.

Would I want it in MY house? Probably not, but my dogs are in the kennel, not the house so it works great. In all reality I'd probably be more concerned with some of those topical treatments-those can be pretty potent chemicals and I wouldn't want them around my kids, my food etc.

exactly why I ask. All the dogs come in and out. Had five running around my house on Sunday to go with the 11 2 leggeds roaming the same space. I think the dogs are trained better.....

I was having great results with Frontline but was going broke buying it at the vet clinic. On the recommendation of another beagler, I tried the Hartz Flea & Tick Drops off the WalMart shelf. For numbers and viciousness, I'll match our ticks against anyone's but the cheap Hartz stuff did the job. I don't recall exact prices, but the Hartz price is about 1/2 that of the Frontline. You might give each a try and see how you want to go.
