i just got my wire and going to start my pen bout how big should it be ? and do i need wood in front of the boxes or all wire floor? any oppions will help.

I build my kennels with three boxes and three runs. Each run is about 3 feet wide and six feet long with a house atatched to the back. The house is built like one big house with dividers inside. I cover both the house and run with roofing. Each run and house set-up is good for two dogs each. I have doors at the front and a door in the back of each house. Wood is a must in front of the house as well, I use a piece the width of the run and a foot wide (the dogs sit on it all the time to get off the wire). This is how I like to do it but you will get a 1000 other ways to build your kennel i am sure. This is just my sugestion and I can add photo's if you like.

If ya get tired of sawin' and hammerin' buy some of these. I had extra tall legs put on them and it sure came in handy last week:

They look like Seneca Kennels to me??
I just boought one and it is well made.
Not cheap $$ but nicely built.

They are Seneca Kennels - 2 double runs with a whelper sandwiched in between, so there are 5 runs total there. You can see they don't span the length of my neighbor's garage, so they are space efficient for city folk. I placed the kennels with the back to the west, and in between the two garages - my neighbor's and mine. That helps cut a lot of the wind and drifting.

steercreek, don't mean to ignore ya, but perhaps looking at these will give you some ideas if you're bent on building your own. If you're in snow country, build the legs tall, lol.

I've got Ozzie in that whelper right now (opens from top) and I can't reach his bowls without the step ladder, lol. I'm NOT SHORT, mind you.....I'm... "vertically challenged" as evidenced by this picture (lmao):

Why not build on a 2x4x8 like scale so you take advantage of the lumbers dimensions, plus it will slide right into the back of a full size pick up between the wheel wells ? I used 2x2 for the flooring spaced 1 3/8 off ctr. Also the medium sized ruffhaus dog house will slide in and out ? Above ground kennels for beagles, are the way to go. JMHO

I agree, B. Trull. It keeps them cleaner, drier, and safer. As you can see from the pics, I have a city back yard. Out front is a bit of traffic. My neighbors complained one time about me keeping the dogs in "rabbit hutches" and it just took a brief education on the merits of how easily my hound dogs can clear a chain link fence in pursuit of a rabbit...or his Shitzu in heat... I've never heard another word from him.

I have my hounds in above ground kennels, and the single biggest plus to me is protection. I have neighbors that let their dogs run all the time. They are both big and small dogs, black labs, a beagle, red bone, boxer, you get the picture. Even when my females are in heat, I have no worries about them being bred by "Bumpis Hounds". I'm a tall fella, and it's much more convenient to reach in there at waist level and feed and water instead of bending over onto the ground. JMO

I have one home made job that is 4x8x10 with a 2 foot box incorporated into it so the run is actually 4x8. Yep, it still works after a few years of being exposed to the weather, but my Seneca kennels are totally awesome! In my opinion, they are worth every penny I spent on them!

Can never have enough doors. Make it at least two enclosures wide so wind does not blow it over. I got a 14 x 7 trailer and put 3 runs on it. Over hangs on each side. I can hook to it and pull it in the field wherever I want to. Could put runs on heavy sled runners so a truck or tractor could pull it around to move it. (I have a lot of field).

I can see by that picture that you ,Jude and I would see eye to eye on about everything even if we don't agree Denny
