Thinking of hanging it up!

Post by hubertsoutlaw »

Have you ever been running your dogs or at a field trial and just really miss your wife or your kids. I do all the time. I just don't think I have what it take to be a Don Hoog, Scott Music ect. I sometimes think the money I am spending on dogs and trialing, I could put toward a needy family or a good cause. All you people that don't really know me, are probably thinking I am pretty weird. I really love running dogs and being around the field trial circut, it is great. Running with my good buddies. It is probably just a faze. We will see in a month or two. IT COULD BE THIS 7 DEGREE WEATHER! Well just reply.

hanging it up

Post by denny606 »

you're suffering from BWD it is a new disorder recently discovered during cold waether and times of no hunting seasons. It only affects a small segment of the population, mainly rednecks with dogs, but don't worry it's easily cured all it takes is some better weather ,more rabbits and maybe a pup ready to start . Its full name is Beagling Withdrawl Disorder. Hope I made you laugh , hang in there better weather is coming and you probably have the rest of the prescription already filled on the rabbits and the pup, denny

Jamie I am in the same boat as you. It is hard to ballance family, work, and our time and money consuming interest. When I met you this fall I noticed the enjoyment your dogs bring you so I can't imagine you completely quiting this sport. You have to make time for your family as well as yourself. As your family grows and changes so will the demands on your time. Right now we have a foot of snow, cold temps, and the rabbits don't want to run anywhere but to a hole. My son has chicken pocks right now so it is perfect to hang out with him and take a break from running dogs. Don't give up on anything that makes you happy family or dogs.

I would think you just need to balance things out a little . Just remember that time lost with your family can't be brought back . I wasted years of my life when fighting chickens and I regret it . If you are traveling away to the trials you may want to consider just trialing once a month locally or something to that extent . Maybe you could just take your wife and kids with you on a short run from time to time . If your job is also keepin you away from your family then that's another story . Just get a new job even if you have to take a cut in pay . Do you have the same feeling at work ?
You only get one chance to raise your kids and usually to please your wife , so make the most you can out of it . If you have room build you a training lot that should make it easier and lift your spirits .
Well I think I just confused myself . I know this , you may not want to listen to Denny    J/K Denny or was I :???:

i didn't mean to seem unsympathetic in any wayand i,m sorry if i did. i was just trying to cheer you up with a little humour ,you seemed like you needed it. but i've been out there on the road working those long hours in my life also and under stand how you feel. you seem to care a great deal about all that you do ,so don't give up on the sport completely untily ou have thought it over real good, personally i gave up the trialing and went out of the dog business altogether for awhile, so it's your decision to make and you seem to have your head on straight and i have all confidence whatever you decide to do it will work out well for you and your family. well i guess the old saying about advice is true , if it was worth much ,people wouldn't be giving it away, denny moore 60629803656

hanging it up

Partner dont feel bad. I almost did twice, and finally did it in 05'. That being said I have one young female I am trying to start out here, because I miss being afield. ya gotta have limits on your hobbies, both time and spending. I will show restraint this time. It is easy to get hung up on the beagle spending treadmill and chasing bloodlines :???:

Denny , I hope I didn't make you feel bad !!! It's great to
have some humor on here . I would hope that no one would
think that you are unsympathetic . You're right about this
weather it's very depressing and like Denny said , you don't
have to quit the sport completely .

Folks, all I can say is that when I was compitition ccon hunting I spent many a hours and all nighters thinking nothing about it. I was young and my mind was on chasing that title. I had two dogs I was campaigning at the time and both ahd 1st place wins and only lacked a few points a piece of becoming night champions. It was at that point on a cast one night that it dawned on me that putting the nite champion title on both these dogs at the same time was not my number one priority in life. This hunt was after we had numerous days of raining and everything was flooded. This cast was taken to a spot quit some distance from the river but with all the rain it had flooded intp a gravel pit and surrounding areas. Well, we didn't know this until the dogs treed and two of the four were not trying right as their owners stated they treed with a chop and were bawling. A couple of the younger guys took off lickity split to get to them for fear something was wrong and when we got there the river had backed up and two dogs were baying at the edge of the water with my dog and another guys dog in the tree about 50 yards out in the flooded woods. Two young guys were already out there hanging on tree limbs trying to get the dogs out put they weren't going to leave that coon. Beings it was my dog I thought I could go out there and get him to come out with me so out I went. I'll tell you that was the dumbest thing I had ever done as the water quickly was over my head and I had to swim from tree to tree to get out towards the tree that the dogs were in. My light had went out so I was heading towards the others lights. When I got out to where the other two guys were I found out that one of them could not even swim. I told them this was crazy and we needed to head back out of there as the dogs were not going to come down with that coon about 10 feet above them. It was that night that I put my priorities in place and made the decision that hunting would be nothing more than a hobby way down on my list of priorities after wife, family, job or anything else that contributed to the well being of any of those things. Now, I hunt when I have the time as it's a hobby and not way of life anymore and I pretty much keep caught up on the honey-do list.

That's a moving story . I think there are many people on here that could learn from that .

You sound a little depressed or maybe you just have it really good at home. It's sweet to hear these sentiments coming from a man. I thought us Mom's were the only ones that really missed the kids.
Personally, as a Mom, I do enjoy my dog show trips without hubby or son, but all it takes is seeing one cute little boy with ears like my sons at the dogshow on about day two and I get homesick and a little melancholy as well ;)

Take care,
Cindy
