I figured it was does in heat....the dogs ran the heck out of 3 rabbits , one big buck and 1 doe and dont know the gender of the other one, he was the lucky one...(bad shot)....scent condition seemed to be the best i have seen it in weeks, bad weather is about to hit again , there goes the good running for a couple more days...SCOTT

Are you sure it was blood? I have seen pretty dern red to pinkish urine in the snow from rabbits while hunting them. A little fleck of blood here and there, maybe... but if it was something the size of a dime, then I would think it to be urine.

Maybe. Could it have been blood from one of the dogs - tail cut w/ briars or something?

The little red and dark colored urine spots on the snow are colored like that because of what the rabbits are eating this time of year, bark and such. I don't think rabbits come into heat and bleed like a dog, most rabbits can breed anytime all year . The wild ones probably have something mother nature does to stop them for a couple months when it is to cold, but not to cold, I have seen little rabbits here in PA out of the nest as early as mid march with snow on the ground.

I looked up biology of a rabbit on the net. Said rabbits are "induced ovulators" and that mating triggers ovulation. Also said that rabbit have brown to orange urine depending on their diet.

Same with hare up here in the North East. They eat bark this time of year.
