I have a bitch with a really bad tail. Every time out it bleeds bad. Most dogs will heal, but her's is unusually bad. I hate a dogs looks with a docked tail. Iwas just wondering what some of u folks thought about this.

TRY TAPING IT UP WITH TAPE.

dock it and you will like it. better for the dog also

Depending on how bad it is, you may have to band it. I had a male I did this to once, didn't take long to fall off, but I agree, I prefer the "natural" length.

i did my male also and i have to do it again.i think whats important is that there comfortable and what ever it takes to keep there mind on hunting.

i had a male in the mid 90's that had all kinds of trouble with his tail. old farmer told me to let him heel before i take him out. it was almost 3 weeks before the scabs feel off and use a litle eletrical tap on it. i think letting him heel was the best thing i ever did. i cant stand the look of a beagle with a docked tail.

like i said i hate a short tail beagle. if i dock it what are the chances of her just beating it up again. will the shorter tail not get tore up as bad?
bill that will work this summer, but taping it up next year? will that be an every trip thing.

I think you will like a shorter tail beagle. You don't have to dock the whole tail just a couple inches...........It doesn't look as bad as you think....Here is my male with his tail docked. I like it alot.......

I've tried taping and medicating.
The only solution I found is dock the tail or leave that dog put up.

My bitch's tail bleeds everytime out and sometimes my male does as well. I thought it was natural for the tail be bleed. I t doesn't seem to bother the dogs and the next day the tail looks fine. At what point does it become necessary to dock the tail?

oh you will know...............I have a smaller female with a natural tail. Her tail bleeds to a point where the tip becomes raw (without hair).......I don't consider it very bad. It's not like it drips blood & it doesn't seem to bother her. When they start to bleed really bad and notice that it is disturbing the dogs hunting abilities then dock..............

I took a little over 2" off my males tail, and he hasnt bled in the field since. Prior to docking, he couldnt be out 5 minutes before it looked like you stabbed him, from all the blood. Tail still looks pretty normal in length.

I tried letting it heal, laid him up for 3 weeks and it never healed. I had no choice. Band it, you'll be happy you did. Hard for a dog to concentrate on running a rabbit when he/she is in pain!

no once i let it heel real good i didnt have another promblem. the end of his tail was all scare tissue. if he bleed after that it was very minamal. the biggest thing was letting him heel and then using the tap for a month or two. after that he was good.


i am talking about alittle blood either. he was getting to the point of almost passing out from blood lose. i could have dock it , but like i said i cant stand the look.

Everyone has there own opinion but me personaly I think the dogs look a whole lot better with thier tails docked...........It makes the tail look more stout instead of a thin pointy look.........I like show beagles tails, that have that buschy look to them.........

I think it looks better and instead of them suffering with there tails staying bloody, I dock them, either by caterating bands or if there pups a slight cut.. I dont think a dog with a long whip looks good.. If you have an older dog with a tail you want to dock the band does no harm. After about 5 minutes he want fell a thing... Sometimes I dont even see them notice back there.. I also think it makes them faster in the brush. Just my opinion thogh..
