what is a jump dog? A dog who can not only find the initial scent, but can actually get the bunny out of his cozy home and get him running in a short amount of time. Many dogs can get out and "strike", but cannot produce a running rabbit. A jump dog gets the rabbit running.

What makes a better one, male or female? Couldnt say that one is better than the other.

Can you train one? maybe a little, but I'm more inclined to say no.

Often hunt is confused with jump and they are different. Hunt is getting into the brush and bumping rabbits, which results in a jump, through hard work. Jump is very special. It is going into the brush only after smelling the rabbit, they wind it like a bird dog. Some, will even freeze (point) like a bird dog. Hunt can be trained and breed for, jump can not.

I'll take either one!!!!!!!!

Preacher is right. Anyone that has one, won't sell it, for sure!

I've have one in my life. I sold a couple of good ones a few years back, because they didn't have the brains to go with the nose. I might have a couple of real ones in the making. All from the same bitch. These, at 18 months, seems to have the brains. My fingers are crossed.

I think they are born with the trait. My sugar gyp has been jumping and running since she was 6 months old. All I did with her was take her to a starting pen one time. A week later she jumped her own rabbit and has not stoped since then. The other day in a pack of 8 we jumped 8 rabbits. She had 4 of the jumps. She is a very good running and check hound as well.

I have had better luck with females being the better jump dog. I have a very nice one that will never be sold. And she is pushing 15 inches which is another thing I like in a female.

I agree. With that being said, everyone's got their price. I've got 5 dogs that arent for sale, but I'd sell them if the price were right. One is a once in a lifetime hound also. At least everyone thats seen him run thinks so.

I have a female that I think is a good jump dog, I have seen her go down a trail and throw her head up and she cuts in a pile of briars and the race is on. She is a good wind scenter. She has a half brother trying to do the same, I do think a lot of it is in the breeding.

I have some dogs that can jump rabbits but I do not consider them to be real jump dogs. A jump dog is like a magician that seems to be able to pull a rabbit out of nowhere. A buddy of mine had a dog named Buster. Best I ever saw. Could go into strange new territory and find one in a hurry. Could find one other dogs passed by. Magical.
