As trialers and hunters , what will you make you the maddest the quickest
And the flip side what makes you the happiest when you do a hard long look at dogs.

I think the thing that makes me the maddest is a hound that won't listen when called. You know when you yell at them and they look at you and just ignore you. But here lately it's been coldtrailing......

What makes me the happiest is when you see a pup or a young hound run a rabbit and progress each time out.....

Not listening is definitely one of the biggest. Or a dog that doesn't hunt very hard. One that will trot along the edge of a fencerow instead of getting in there or that will just keep circling a sink hole or whatever.

What makes me the happiest is the complete opposite. You can't really fault a dog for it's ability to run a track. But, one that puts the effort in there to hunt hard makes me happy. He can only do with what he was given. I love it when a dog just out hunts the other dogs and busts the brush up and jumps rabbits. Also a dog that hunts with you and minds well.

A hound that doesn't pack, this one got a hunting spot named after myself (mad Paul's hill), The quality that ranks high would be 'heart'. I know that's pretty general, but you probably have seen those dogs. One that would sacrifise the owner getting in trouble with the boss at home, just to run one more rabbit.

Desire is the name of the game for me.....if they have desire it shows me they have brains, they hunt and seach hard and can be corrected and shaped into a rabbit dog. They can have all the tools, but if they have no desire or enthusiasm you have nothing...

I am a big believer is starting pups young as I feel this increases their enthusiasm and desire. Thats not to say you have to pack them with older dogs at young age, but a steady diet of trips to the woods and rabbits in front of them is ALWAYS a plus.....

A hound that doesn't listen, stands around while others hunt, looks at ya when you seekem in briars.

Biggest fault is running trash. Nothing worst that a deer or coyote race....will ruin the hunt.

In a slightly different direction...........................

An unfinished hound that will run away from you when you correct it with the shock collar. Most (not all) faults are correctable, but I wouldn't spend any time working with a dog that does this.

A dog that quits the race either by coming in, or constantly splitting off has the one fault I absolutely can't stand.

Having the dog with the most heart, that keeps jumping rabbits and hunting when everyone else wants to quit makes me smile!

Skirting cover burns me if their nose is to the ground. Now if they move to the downwind side and stick their nose in the air, I am allright with that.

Watching pups figure it out always brings a smile to my face, but watching a started dog mature into a "hound" brings me complete joy. Also, hunting over a true jump dog. To me it doesn't get any better than watching them work their magic.

I think the thing that aggravates me the most is deer running as that just takes away from the time in the field that could be utilized for more rabbit running experiance.
The thing that pleases me most is heart or desire for without that I believe you don't have much to start with.
Notice I didn't state deer running was a fault but as much as I hate for it to mess up a good day of rabbit running experiance it could very well show a heart full of desire to pursue game and I'd much rather see a young dog flat smoke the hide off a deer than stand around at my feet with no interest to do anything. They just gotta have the want to!
