Dew claws is a genetic trait passed on from one generation to another....
Eating grass is something they do to make you wonder what the heck they are doing that for....

Beagles are born with dew claws on the front, and sometimes on the back, the ones that we have had in the past that were born with dew claws in the back we cut them off.As far as the grass eating, the old timers used to say that they would eat grass because they have worms. But we think they eat it because its sweet and its different to them.

I always heard that a dawg will eat grass when their stomach is upset to clean it out.( Will make them upchuck )
I also think when a dawg overheats they will eat grass for the moisture content when water is not readily available.
Not sure what causes dew claws but I do think it could be genetic. In 20 yrs. of raising pups I have only had 1 pup born with one.

Have asked a couple of vets about eating grass and they say dog's eat it because they like it. No health reason.

The old timers that I know and that are very knowledgeable say that dew claws in beagles, hounds, and bird dogs show their is cur blood in them somewhere.

The saying is that a full blooded beagle will have dew claws in the back.

I have been told Eating grass is usually due to the lack of Nitrogen in their system.
I started feeding my dogs green beans about once a month right out of the can. I will pour the broth and about a half a can on their food.
I have noticed that they dont eat near as much grass since doing this. Cant stand it when I am at DOG trial and I brought the COW.

Ive got a male that gets sick in the box. He eats grass every time out.
When he craps it looks like Johnny Mike spit out a whole pouch of Chewing Tobacco.

Well I had a litter of pups a few months back and three of them had dew claws and two of them didn't. I guess the two that didn't have dew claws are full blood.......... lol

That's strange. I don't think I have ever seen that before. Did you breed her to two different males?
